I was cutting hay for a couple hours tractor ran fine, just getting ready to pull out of the field and it quit,it will start for a second then quits, its getting gas,I opened the drain on the carb and gas pours out,the distributor cap is pretty corroded ,would that cause it,any ideas ,thanks, have to wait till tomorrow to get a cap, nothings open today

Bob,you have to wait a minute then it will start again, how do you tell if it looses spark? are you thinking the coil might be bad?

Connect a spark tester or even a spare sparkplug to one of the plug wires. Ground the tester or sparkplug.

Start it and watch the spark to see if the spark quits at the instant it begins to stall or continues on 'til the engine coasts to a stop.

If it IS losing spark, next thing would be to get a meter or test light on the ignition switch side of the coil primary and see if the coil is getting power even as the engine is costing to a stop.

IF power TO the coil remains constant, likely you have a bad condenser or failing coil. If the power supply to the coil fails, it could be a bad ignition switch or resistor (if used) or a wiring/connection problem.

A WEIRD problem such as an bad insulator on the primary terminal that passes through the distributor body (IF used) shorting as it warms up or other oddball "short" or open is a SMALL possibility.

A bad distributor cap is UNLIKELY to cause a "starts, then stops" problem.

On the other hand, OBVIOUSLY, if the spark isn't failing you have a gas flow restriction problem.

Get a spark tester on it and post back.

well I went to try that and the tractor popped right off ,let it run for couple minutes and thought I might as well drive it home and it died about halfway so now its sitting in the road,sh#@#@#!!t

well I got it home but it will just barley fire, put a new coil on didn't help and my tester is fried,so I'm going to wait until tommorow and get a new tester!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure you use the TOW position on the shifter ( or tow disconnect if power shift ) if you have to pull it. OR else ruin the tranny.

I'd try a new condenser.

well I put a plug on it and it has spark when I crank it over, gas runs out the drain plug on the carb,so it must be getting gas ,I'm baffled!

I would lean toward a fuel problem. Mine used to do exactly what you are describing. Gas would come out the bottom of the carburetor like yours does, but it wouldn't stay running. I took the carburetor off and cleaned it all out. Same with the sediment bulb(if your fuel pump has one). Put on one of those cheap Fram plastic in line fuel filters. I have not had a problem since as long as I change the filter every once in a while.
