Try looking up serial number info on the left and in the Ford forums that is how I found the year on my uncles IH tractors

external_link may be helpful too but some of their data is incmplete

first make sure it really is a 8n, [ 4speed tranny small bolt pattern wheels, there is lots of 9 and 2 ns out there for sale[ 3 speed tranny large bolt pattern wheels,] as 8n's because the owner "has been told" its a 8n, also to some people any ford tractor made before the 70's is a 8n, they aint, next with that out of the way look on the side of the engine behind the oil filter and find a flat area about 4 inches long by 1/4 high, the serial number is weakly hand stamped there , dont be suprised to find a 8n engine in a 9n tractor or vise versa the engins will all innerchange when you have the number look to the left here under seiral numbers and see what you have

Well as the others have said make 100$ sure it is an 8N by the fact it has a 4 speed. Next if it is a front mount distributor 4 nipple cap it is a 1948 to early 1950. If it has the side mount distributor with the 5 nipple cap it is a late 1950 to 1952

Look on the hydraulic pump underneath. The cover is stamped with an actual date,(the date of the pump manufacture) The tractor should be close.
