Never pulled anything other than antique tractors to start. Can i pull or roll a jd 2640 down a hill to start? the starter is acting up and of coarse the dealers are all closed up for teh wekeend.. what range works teh best 2-5,6?

Does it have reverser or maybe hydraulic hi-lo? If so, may not be able to.

Put in highest gear and move by hand and see if fan moves. Be careful.

IF ITS NOT A HDY DRIVE DON'T SEE WHY NOT HIG GEAR IS WHERE I'D START JUST MAKE SURE THIERS ROLLING SPACE TO STOP IF NEED TO !

If you have the HI-LOW or reverser on the lever to the left of the steering wheel DO NOT pull start it or serious damage to the unit can result !!

Depends on the age...
The 40 series... early manheims had fully hydraulic Hi-Lo and later ones had Hydraulic engaged Hi and bellville engaged Lo... so if you lose pressure the later ones will default to Lo and you should be able to pull start.
The quickest way to tell... the later ones will sit on a hill in gear. Early ones will not.
If pull starting, use the highest gear available.

If it has a High-low hydraulic shift or the power reverser DO NOT pull start it. You will damage the shift packs or drums. IF it is a straight collar shift then you can pull it fine.

I have a 1982 2640 and my starter burnt up in the middle of hay making, I have been parking on a hill and roll starting it in 7th or 8th gear does fine. Mine dont have the reverser just straight hi/low 8 speed. Yeah you can pull start it.
