leaking hydraulic loader cylinder

gentlemen, i have an old MF55: it has an aftermarket front loader. one of the cylinders which makes the bucket go up and down is leaking where the shaft goes in and out of the cylinder. can the cylinder be repaired or do i have to buy a new one. they seem expensive. any ideas where to by the repair parts or a new cylinder. thanks. arron.

They can be repaired...your bottom seal has let go. Look in the phone book for a industial cylinder repair shop....bet it'll cost you 50-85 bucks to reseal the cyl.

the boys in the hydralic shops around here would hurt themselves laughing if you told them you expected to pay $65 to get loader cylinder rebuilt

Find a kit and doit yourself. I had the same problem a few years ago, took it off and took it to the local Case dealer, they rrepaired it, I put it back on , it still leaked, took it off and back they repaired it again. This time it leaked externally and internally, wouldnt hold a load. I went back to them and they gave my money back. I ask for a repair kit, they didn't have one. Used the last one on my cylinder. I disasembeled the cylinder. took the seals to a bearing and seal place. They found new O rings and seals. I repaired it myself. That was 10yrs ago. It still does not leak.

Last time I had a couple cylinders rebuilt it cost less then $100 for a pair of them. So yep at least in my area it isn't all that costly to have them done unless they are a real pain to do. Oh by the way that shop did want you to have them pulled open or it cost more

It all depends on what needs to be done. Some only need seals replaced, in which case it is a cheap repair. Replacing seals won't do any good if the rod is pitted and needs to be rechromed. I also had a cylinder for which the rod guide in the cap was unevenly worn and it would always start leaking within a few weeks after putting in new seals (with a rechromed rod). In that case, a new cylinder was cheaper.
