1994 dodge 3500 trans

I have a buddy that has a 1994 dodge 3500 with a auto trans. He has a problem with reverse. He has all the forward gears and they don't slip but has no reverse. He told me it tries but with no luck. Does anyone know how to fix it or does he need a new trans?
 
My 86 Chevy did that. Trans shop told me that it won't be long and the forward gears will start going out too. I had it rebuilt.
 
I am by no means an expert on trannys, but I have heard that reverse requires the highest pressure to engage, hence the reason it may work in forward and not reverse. I think pressure gov. and band adjustment would be a place to start.
 
I have a 98 dodge that did the same thing. The reverse band either broke or jumped out of its adjustment clip. I dropped the pan and saw that it was loose. Almost decided to tear into it myself but the local tranny guy said he would give me a 12,000 mile or 12 month warranty if I let him overhaul it. So I did. Mine is a 46RE, now I am looking for a 47RE.
 
trans is shot, time for a rebuild, most times it is reverse that goes bad first, forward soon after. Been there done that many times. Good Luck Bob
 
The reverse band has either broken/burned or it's so far out of adjustment the apply link fell out. The bands have to be adjusted on those tranny's every 12-20K depending on use
 
It's most likely the low/reverse band since you have all forward speeds. The reason you still have low is because the band isn't applied in low unless you put the shifter in low. Chrysler did this to allow for more support when starting off heavily loaded. Trans. must come out for the repair. If you pull it be careful of the crank sensor. I've seen many guy's crack ones after engine/trans replacement because they are plastic. You will know you did because it will crank till next Tuesday without firing. Hope this helps. Gerard
