Oil in Distributor

What does motor oil in the sidemount distributor mean? I found some (more than just a drop or two) on the plate when I pulled the distributor to change points and do some work. It has not caused the motor to misfire.

Worn distributor bushings can allow oil vapor (blowby) to work it's way up there.

LOTS of blowby or a restricted crankcase breather can add to the problem.

What do you mean "restricted crank case breather"? Can you elaborate a bit more?

I imagine it to be the bushings, but which parts do I need to order to repair the dizzy? I don't have my master parts book with me as I am at Pensacola Beach.

Thanks.

You distributor is timed and driven by the cam shaft in the crank case so that it remains in time with valves opening and closing, which is also are timed with the crank shaft and pistons doing their things. All of that happens in the crank case with builds an incredible amount of turbulent pressure. That's why breathing is essential through things like breathers, PCV valves, etc.

As stated below, you may have a problem with bushing, O-rings in your distributor that is allowing oil to blow by between the distributor housing and shaft, and/or you may have a problem with positive crank case ventilation, whereas the pressure is building and trying to find a place to escape...through your distributor. Breathers and PCV valves are easier and less expensive to check and replace and clean, so start there.

Good luck.

Mark, this is a 1950-ish tractor... NO "O" rings in the distributor, NO PVC system, just some coarse horse hair or steel wool-like stuff in the oil filler cap! REAL low tech!

At this point, I don't think it's broke bad enough to need fixing!

Clean the oil filler cap/breather and, so long as it's not misfiring, don't worry about a little wear in the distributor bushings at this point.

Bob, I missed the tractor info. I read a reply back to him, and then his response asking to be clearer or more exact, so, I thought was a general question and got carried away.

No O-ring in the distributor? Hmm. No wonder it fills up. I can fix that you know. Grin.

Thanks fellows. I normally inhabit the 9n/8n forum, but accidentally posted on the general forum. Sometimes better to leave well enough alone and take a minimalist approach as you suggest. Clean the oil breather cap.
