exhaust and spare tire clearance

How close can exhaust be to the spare tire before if causes any damage to the spare? Couple years back I put an aftermarket exhaust on my pickup and there was about an inch gap between the spare and the pipe. I thought that was a little too close so the spare has been riding in the bed of the truck ever since.

I was thinking that was a little close as well, that's why the spare has been riding in the bed. Hate to leave the tire at home when I need to use the bed, only time I'll need the spare is when I don't have it.

The exhaust pipe on my Ford got bent and was only 5 inches from my spare. I found it when I knocked my spare loose on a rock. Had already burned almost thru the tread. I guess I am lucky it had not caught fire.

Hasn't anyone looked at how close the fuel tanks are to the exhaust pipes on cars and trucks?(3 to 4 inches at most.)My old 79 F-350 has run 2"from the tank its whole life.Tail pipes don't get all that hot plus driving causes air tobe moving across both all the time.

Do you mean the tail pipe at the rear of the truck? Drive about 20 miles then get out and feel the pipe by the tire. Odds are it's just warm at worst. Most of the heat dissapated at the converter and muffler.

Buy a piece of 3" aluminum tube about 14" long.
Slice it long ways to make a shield. bolt through each corner of the shield into a nut, then cut off excess threads. Use SS hose clamps to hold it in place on the Pipe. Jim

Yes, I did mean the tailpipe at the rear of the truck. I may try to feel the pipe next time I get the truck out. No converter or muffler, 5 inch straight pipe from the turbo out (2003 Dodge 2500 diesel).
