voltage regulator

My 1951 Ford 8-N tractor with side mount distribitor has the original voltage reg on it, I need to replace it but the ones made now are differant than mine. Mine has two terminals on the top and one on the side, the new one has three on the side, I'm not sure how to hook it up as I have an aftermarket wireing harness on the tractor and the wires fell right in place on the old regulator, its so old I can't read which terminal is which, any help appreciated.

this would likely been a great post for the FORD N forum!! dozens of ford owners would have seen it that might not otherwise read this forum.

the old vreg will have gen/arm on one tab, field on aother tab, and ground on another.

ground is easy to find. find the tab that has a wire to the frame.

the field tab is the one that has a bias resistor hooked to it ( flip reg over )

that leaves 1 tab... armature/generator old units likely say gen.. new units say arm.

Field and Arm/Gen tabs on regulator go to the corresponding posts on the generator (field is the smaller terminal). Ground goes to ground, of course. So what do you hook to the battery?

nothing directly... the bat tab runs into the wire harness to make some other stops before hitting usually the hot side of the start solenoid.
