trickle charger

I bought two Schumacher 6-12 volt trickle chargers at WalMart. They are to shut down to maintenance mode when charged. My batteries are now over 7 volts and no sign of switching to maintenance mode. It is automatic 6 or 12 volt charge, depending on the battery only.

Is this acceptable? The cost about $25 each.

generally if they drop down to an amp, your ok, but keep the water level checked. I would be more comfortable if the voltage was 6.6 volts for long term trickle or holding.

take them back for a refund.A good battery will hold a charge for 6 months.Buy an 89 cent hydrometer and use it.

How much over 7 volts? 7.2 is the industry standard for charging rates on a conventional 6 volt battery at 80 degrees temp. If you can look in cells, see if they are gassing, (bubbling). You would want just a tiny bit of bubbling and battery not getting warm. Maintenence free batterys require a slightly higher charging voltage also and the chargers may be for them. All wet cell batteries self discharge when setting idle. The warmer the temp, the faster they discharge. If they are cool , clean and dry they will hold charge longest. If the batteries show any sign of wetting on top they are being over charged.

The normal settings on standby generators is 13-13.5 for 12 volt systems. 25-25.5 for 24 volt systems. This is using a float charger were you can set your charge cut off setting. Never really trusted some of those battery maintainer chargers.
