generator not charging

I have a JD 3020 gas that the generator light is staying on all the time. Before I take it off for a rebuild is there a simple way to check and make sure that is what the problem is and it"s not in the wiring somewhere? Thanks, George

First thing you should check is the voltage regulator. This is the culprit most of the time. I had the same problem with a 3010 gas, I had to change the regulator. After some time, I guess the contacts get sticky in the regulator and the light comes on. All I had to do once in awhile is tap the regulator lightly with a wrench and the light went out. Maybe this is the only problem you might have is just some sticky contacts. Sometimes it can be the simplest things that go wrong.

There are several test you can make. One is to take a jumper wire and attach it to the generator field terminal and the other end to a good ground. If it charges then it is the regulator. Another test is to take the generator off and make the motor test. A wise old mechanic also told me all your generator might need is a "tune up" This meant taking the generator off and then take it apart and use some fine sandpaper and polish the commutator good , put it back together. I make a generator trouble shooting chart for the Oliver collectors some time ago. I will send you an e-mail. Then you reply and I can e-mail you a copy. j

Most likely the brush holders need polished up a bit so the brushes are free to move.
