JD 503 Rotary Mower

I have the option to buy a 503 cutter for $300 bucks. I have a 20+ plus year old king kutter that needs to be welded and a new bolt to secure the blade. I also put on a new shaft.

I'm assuming the 503 is the light duty cutter which is fine but I'm thinking its better made than the King Kutter and the new LX5/Frontier RC60. The back end is dinged but what do I look for in a used mower and is this a good deal? They might be including delivery as well for the 300 bucks.

I guess bottom line were they a good mower?

I have a 603, the 6 foot version of the 503. I bought it new at least 10 years ago. It's beat up now, but it's cut a lot of weeds. Some of them higher than the hood of the tractor. I have not had any problems with it yet. They are considered a light duty cutter. Make sure that 503 has a slip clutch. You don't want a shear bolt machine.

My King Kutter is a shear bolt, this is a slip clutch model. Anything I should look for? I priced the major components and a new probably chinese made gear box is $750 if its available.

It looks better built than my king kutter but my KK would be almost 30 years old.

I bought this one early this spring at alocal farm auction right down the road from our farm Ipaid 500 for it, it wasnt used too much and could drive my tractor over to bring it home. The only 2 bidders were me and a equiptment dealer who buys stuff and resells it

Make sure the driveline u joints are tight. Look at the condition of the blades. Make sure the gearbox is not leaking oil and check the gearbox for excessive backlash. That's about all I can think of.
