Post below about refrigerator: Compressor was very warm. (HOT!) Put an 8" fan on it for an hour or so, cooled it down, and when I plugged refrigerator back in, it buzzed once, then took off and ran, apparently all night. Compressor is quite warm, coils on back of machine, warm but not hot - normal. Left the fan on the compressor running. Apparently the over-temp cutout switch in the start circuit is the culprit. Will leave fan running on compressor until this heat-wave breaks, see what happens. Is that cutout switch internal to compressor motor, or external? In other words, can I replace it out, or am I in for a new refrig?

IF the problem is in the cutout AND the switch is housed outside the motor AND you can get a part for it you may be in luck.
The switch would be mounted on the outside of the compressor case. Probably the only thing you can open on the compressor housing.
My guess is that the compressor motor is failing. Not much owner serviceable on a refer. That and having to take the gamble what you did fixes it or you food will spoil/defrost.
Sears has outlet stores in many cities that sell scratched/dented/repoed refridgerators very reasonably.

I am guessing your condenser coil is nice and clean? Probably so. Refrigeration systems loose their efficiency over time, just like everything else, and it sounds like yours has about reached the end of it's life. If you can make it through your heat wave your talking about, it may last for awhile yet, but with the price of groceries, I would hate to take that gamble. The SEARS outlet suggestion is a good one, I bought my last couple of freezers and refrigerators that way. Good-luck.

Most refrigerator and a replaceable overload. It is on the side of compressor behind a cover held on with a spring. They sell a universal replacement..Supco 3-an-1. I think the part # sh250. This plus a bath with a hose should fix you up

bad start capacitor?? or bad connections at the compressor due to heat.. cut back old wire and install new crimps and power back up.. replace start cap if bad.
