starter/generator on a GT

My garden tractor has a starter/generator. Having little (no) experience with them, I notice that the battery only gets charged when the engine is running at the higher speed. The amp guage reads 0 at idle. Is this the way they all work?

Generators are like that. A combination Starter Generator is pretty much a fixed unit. There might be an adjustment on the voltage regulator that might help, but not knowing what type of system it is limits the response we can give.
A smaller pulley on the Starter Generator might help it produce more voltage sooner, but it would possibly crank slower. Jim

If a cub Cadet with ACR it has to turn 300 RPM to get compression to start-- wouldn't want it to turn slower

Normal. Don't run it at slow idle all the time.
Can't hurt to replace the small pulley with the identical new unit and a fresh premium quality belt.
Odds are the pulley is worn and the belt glazed or hardened with age.

I have a S/G on this tractor I've had over 39 years and it does the same thing. It keeps the battery fully charged from use. Hal
