Knee High by the 4th

Corn made knee high by the fourth again this year. Actually, it was knee high by the fourth of June this year. We've received a little too much rain, but could be worse.

Took this picture on June 26th, I planted it on April 15th so not early for us. It is the earliest I've ever seen corn tassel in our part of the world. On the July 4th this year there were thousands of acres with tassels. Where the corn isnt suffering from too much rain it looks good.

Corn is tasseling here in central NY. I've never seen it that early before. After getting pounded the rain shut off abruptly a week ago. I'd just as soon the corn hold off a little. Another week of 95F and it's curling a little already. Our topsoil is NOT very deep.

Last week the corn and milo in my area of south central Kansas was really suffering from lack of moisture.

Saturday morning it started to mist which later turned to rain. Today, Monday, I dumped 4.65" from my gauge and more rain has fallen to refill it to .70".

The rain was a little tough on July 4th activities but still a great blessing.

Hey, there's a hand growing in your field. Is that a farm hand? Gettin kind of hard to find these days. Better collect the seed.lol.

I have about 4 acres of Sweetcorn some planted in March , Its about 3 feet tall turning brown and dieing with no ear. I planted about 500 each of cabbage and broccoli, bushhogged it last week, cabbage heads about the size of a baseball and broccoli no better. Hot and dry, dry , dry.

Where Are you ,,? here in S.IND , it is common to be setting ears before the 4th of July ,. 1st red Tomato is good on 1st Day of summer , usually when the 1st tassle of corn appears ... Wheat is still being harvested here FULL BORE ,. I have Plantecd double Crop Beans on the 21 July and Got a 25 Bu. acre respectable yield ...

We're located near Osage, Iowa. About 30 miles east of I35 and 12 miles south of the Iowa/Minnesots line. This was planted April 20.

Yesterday, I saw some tassles on some of my corn. This is only the second time I've seen tassles this early here in my part of NW Iowa. It's Pioneer 36V53 which is a 103-104 day corn for this region. Planted it on April 17th. Years ago a neighbor planted some 98 day Dekalb early and it tassled on the 4th.

Tried to spray some fencerows around a cornfield on the 4th and as I got into the field aways the corn was taller than the hood on my Oliver 88. Couldn't turn around without slaughtering corn so I kept going and ended up stuck. Had to unhook the sprayer, get the tractor turned around with the front wheels balled up and sliding along and follow my tracks back out. Ended up slaughtering a bunch of corn but there was no other choice. Pulled the sprayer out backwards yesterday and a few hours later we got another 3/4" of rain. Jim

Looking good Dean! We headed out Friday for some R&R at the lake with one field tasseled and all suffering from hot dry conditions. This morning, I found that all my corn is tasseled and in great shape following right at 3 inches of the wet stuff over the weekend!

Here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, it finally stopped raining, now turning off hot- predicting mid 80's today, 90's for the rest of the week. Corn was 2 inches high and yellow for about a month, now is greening up nicely and growing a couple inches a day. Ditto the beans, at least the ones the slugs didn't get to.
