faulty dimmer turn signal switch

Apologies for not being tractor related but I figured there might be at lease a few mechanics that may have replaced the switch.
The turn signal/dimmer switch on my wife's 2002 Buick Century is acting up. It feels like it's broken inside, and does not always dim the lights nor return back to bright. One night while driving home it blacked out completly.
Saturday I took off the dash covers and determined I need to remove the stearing wheel. Air bag and all. Never tried this yet.
I did a GOOGLE search on the switch and found I am not alone with this faulty switch. One site that may have provided instructions had their account closed.
My HANE'S repair manual is of no help.
I am resigning myself to take it to a mechanic.
O'REILY'S want over $200.00 for the switch. It list for over $500.00. I hate to think what the final bill would be.
Any help would be appreciated.

I would check out the wrecking yards for a Switch. Rock Auto says these vehicles share the switch.

I would also be looking for a GM/Buick forum for instructions on how to install. Tilt wheel or no tilt, cruise or no cruise can make a difference in columns. Good luck!

If it's a known problem with those switches I would not put in a used one, you'll likely end up back at square one sooner than later.
I can't imagine having to remove the steering wheel and air bag just to change that switch but I could be wrong.
Damn GM and their flaky electrical parts!

I have change a couple of those switchs on diffrent cars and truck with air bags. You should not have to pull the streering wheel most cars that i know of with air bags. have split colums. but i could be wrong.

I would put a used one in to save fifty bucks. Here is how to do it if directions are correct from a search for 2002 Century.

You will find the headlamp dimmer switch on the left side of the steering column. You will see a rod that comes down to the switch from the turn signal lever. There are two small bolts that holds the switch to the side of the steering column.Remove the switch and unplug it and install the new switch. This is a spring loaded switch when the rod pushes the center of the switch it changes from low to high beams. You do not need to remove the steering wheel since this switch is located on the left lower side of the steering column. To replace this switch it takes about 20 minutes.Best of luck.
