Independence Day:

By the rude bridge that arched the flood
Their flag to april's breeze unfurled
Here once the embattled "Farmers" stood
and fired the shot heard around the world

A poem penned by Ralph Waldo Emerson and inscribed at the base of the Minute Man Statue in Concord Mass. On April 18,1775 this "Shot that was heard around the World" was fired here by the British contingent of troops sent to break up a gathering of Farmers and Merchants from this small community who were on the verge of an insurection to acheive Independence from Britains hold on their lives. These Minute men returned the rifle fire and several men were killed on either side. On april 19th,1775 the Revolutionary War officially began at Lexington Mass. . On July 4,1775 a group of influential Patriots signed into being our Declaration of Independence. Hundreds of battles later on Nov 26.1782 British troops were finally withdrawn from New York in defeat. On Nov. 30, 1782 Britain finally acknowledged the Independence of the United States of America and withdrew all of her troops who wished to return to Britain. Some of these troops who decided to stay instead and adopt America as their new home no doubt have descendants who patronize this Antique Tractor Forum. 235 years later we can proudly say,God Bless America. Thank you Patriots for our Freedom.JH
