Has this ever happened to you....and why did it happen?

A couple of years ago I bought a D19 Allis from a local dealer. They wanted a fair amount of money and there were a couple of issues I had with it. One of them was the lack of a functioning water temp gauge. They agreed to replace it.

I took delivery for it and after a while I noticed that the very new looking water temp gauge didn't move at all after I used it. I traced it to the engine block and it appeared to be installed correctly. Well, I wasn't going to send it back just because of that....

Though I intended to work on it myself, I never did. The machine didn't overheat or anything, so nothing bad happened.

Now, I've done a lot of work with this machine for more than two years now. The gauge never did work. But a week and a half ago while baling hay I looked down and the temp gauge was reading between 170 and 180. Since then it works just like it should.

What could make this happen? Seems kind of odd to me....

There was probabaly an air bubble in your line and it is just now working it self out. I've had this happen to me before.

It was just stuck from sitting in a box for years. No real issue, it is a sealed system, so nothing could get in or out. you were just lucky. Jim

Bought an old Ferguson tractor several years ago, bought it home...it needed some plug wires and exhaust system. Fixed those and it was time to start it up...you can't start them in gear cause they start with the gearshift...so, standing beside it I tried it and it came to life, sounded alright to me...I walked around to the other side and I happened to glance down to see how much oil pressure it carried. It was sitting on zero but, it sounded too good to not have any pressure...so, I took a crescent wrench out of my pocket and rapped under the dash beneath the guage and it jumped right up to 40 lbs. Had to do that a few times till the guage got used to working again...still working years later. ohfred

Needle stuck. I had a oil pressure gauge not working. I pried it open all the way around, took it out of the can lubed it moved the needle a few times has worked for years now. Mark
