I am restoring a John Deere model A long hood tractor. it will start and run reluctantly for about five seconds and then sputter out. i have played with the carb and Im pretty sure that it is not the problem. now im thinking its the magneto. Any ideas? im pretty new to this so anything would help.

To assure you of the carb being OK (I think it is a plugged fuel delivery system), put gasoline in a pump oil can and use it after it starts by squirting fuel into the carb air opening to provide fuel, if it continues to run, it is fuel delivery. mags rarely stop working after startup. They usually fail to start at all.

I would start by opening the drain on the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas for at least 5 minutes. Catch that gas and that way you can look at it real good for water and also pour it back in once you have made sure it is good and not full of water or dirt/rust. That short a time sounds like fuel but could also be a bad condenser in the mag
