Stupid move, Almost got run over.

Filling up sprayer today, went to MF 240 to start tractor to start pump . Was standing on ground beside tractor. Turned key , nothing happened, noticed H-L lever was in Low. So I kinda slapped leaver into neutral, tractor started and the lever went in high, nearly running over me. I somehow manaaged to get on tractor and push clutch in before sprayer backed in the barn. I was really lucky the tractor didn't run over me.It seem as I got older these dumb actions happen more often. Really lucky today.

Your still alive, and learned something today. I have a saying that I quote to people often "The day you don't learn something is the day you die."

Once when it fit into conversation, I asked my wife if I ever told her about the time I got run over by my own pickup.

She replied, "No, and I don't want to hear about it!"

I am bad to start my 245 from the ground, but I verify both sticks are in neutral, Plus, I leave the stop knob out til it turns a few revs. Once I see tractor is not moving, I push knob in and it starts.

I did that a week ago on a M farmall that I had just pulled my truck out of a ditch with. I guess I have done it so many times I didnt realize in my haste I left it in gear when I killed it. Luckily, I was able to get my sorry carcass out of the way and jump on it and get things under control. With my past couple years witnessing three major bad (two ultimately bad as in no tomorrow) accidents at work, I should be more careful but you really just start feeling immortal again after a couple months.

I lost a great friend a few months ago that had the same lapse in judgement.

To just say BE CAREFUL...is not enough.

Case Guy;

I like your sentiment. The older I get the more I realize how much there is to learn and so little time to learn it. I'd like to recognize more grasses, wild plants, birds, and insects. A few weeks ago I found an American bittern that flew into a power line. I got to inspect it "hands on" and will never have that opportunity again. A few days later I discovered carrion beetles and learned they carry a small mite to help eat ant larva that attack the beetle larva. I try to learn something new every day. This forumn helps a lot.

Did that once (recently) with our JD brush tractor I work. It was chained and binded to the trailer. I had forgotten the key so I was goind to "see" if I could jump it at the starter. Sure enough it fired off and wheels started spinning. The back wheel started pulling my leg under. By the time I pulled the stop knob, it had pulled my foot under. I pulled my foot out, leaving my boot under the edge of the tire. I was a second form losing a leg or worse. Wont do that again!

I think I have the record for stupidity. Was planting corn and started tractor from the ground with neutral switch bypassed. I have spent the better part of the last five years recovering. Lost half of one lung and had to have back surgery to repair a pars fracture.

Got a MF231 and start it in the same manor alot but with a little better luck. Thanks for your post. I try to learn from others mistakes as well as my own. DoubleR

I remember a guy that was jump starting a dodge car one time He was standing in front of it, He rode the bumper into the river if it hadn't been for me and a friend he would have drounded. So be carefull that it is out of gear before starting.

I hold the record and have maxxed out on doing something stupid. Was going to take the spiker off of a NH1715 I use for mowing etc. 1st mistake, I did not let the water out of it. 2nd mistake, I and my assistant (wife) each standing on either side of tractor between back tire and spiker. Left tractor running in neutral with brakes locked. Unhooked bottom portion of 3pt hitch and spiker rolled toward tractor catching BOTH wife and myself between spiker and back tire. Neither could move, as spiker stuck into wifes leg and my leg was between spikes with blood running from 4 places. Cell phone in house, no one else around. Found stick and knocked parking brake off and physically rolled tractor forward enought to get our legs out from between spiker and back tire. After the trip to the hospital for stitches I vowed never to attempt to break my record for just plain being careless and stupid.

HAD a neighbor, neutral bypass switch broken on JD4440, started it with a screwdriver on starter, It took off squeezing him between the duals, went across yard and got hung up in ditch before he came out. NOTICE HAD a neighbor
