O/TMustang 4.6 P/I heads prblem

Sons took working motor apart , then installed Police /I heads on the 98 4.6 MuStang..Got it running just fine .. But , Now from What I understand ,, The engine oil is getting in the radiator ,, Eldest son is not available til weekend ,,and the youngest son Who owns the Stang is Confused and asked me to ask You guys ?, what you think may have gone wrong ???... Thanx guys

Cracked Heads is what I think ,, Doubtful if the head gasket is upside down backwards ... And ,Yes, They changed Intakes,, also there are no stupid quesrtions , were dealing with Dudes in their 20s ,,I asked why take apart a perfectly running engine Just to make it EVen MORE HI -PERFORMANCE ??

J, while I don't disagree with your assessment of the situation, Will Rogers stated it well, "Experience comes from good judgement and a lot of that comes from bad judgement". Thats how the kid learns. Lets wish him well in future endeavors.

If it was fine before, the problem is probably in the installation. A common mistake made by young mechanics on this type of repair is NOT blowing out the head bolt holes with compressed air. Coolant or oil can stop the head bolt at the torque setting without getting the proper crush on the gasket. Did they block sand the deck and head, scratch the sealing surface of the head? Some head gaskets can be installed backwards and leak oil into the cooling system. I saw a young tech do that at the Dodge dealer I worked at, but I can't say for sure about the 4.6 liter. Check the gasket for markings. Oh and tell them do not reuse the head gaskets if they disassemble the engine. Hope this helps. Gerard

You May have sumthin there ,,because I don't know what you are talkin about ,,Although I have been completely away from this project . From helping out Here and there . Sons know to Get all surfaces EXTRA CLEAR OF ALL debris .. I suspect the heads may be cracked , I Have not gotten satisfasctory answers from my son to my Questions concerning these look like new heads , WHY they were Available , what Condition were they In when they came off , Were they checked by machine shop ? ITs all a a mystery to me ,andWE ALL cannot give Good advice based on myth ,,. All we can do is Guess

Sorry, I didn't see the part about the different heads...old age. Verify they will work on that engine, then take them to a machine shop and have them checked for out of flat and for cracks.

The PI heads were introduced in 1998-1999 models. Sometime around 2003(?) Ford started putting "PI" heads on all 4.6 2V engines (already standard on Mustang GT and most F150s). PI actually stands for "power improved" - not police interceptor. It pumped up the power to an awesome 250 or so hp instead of 220 or so. About the same hp most larger V6 engines put out.
