Figure this one out.

I know the answer but lets see if any of you can figure it out.
1960 or so Allis D-17, started up good as always took off to bale hay, NH271. Went around 2 or 3 times and tractor dies. Turn key ya key switch start 12 volt system. Starts right up and then dies and will not turn over. Battery good connections good but still will not turn over. Mess with it more and all at once it starts up and then dies again. Did this 4 or 5 times plus. So then what is wrong with it. I know and did what it took to finish baling the hay, ya a whole lot of hay as in 12 square bales. LOL I'll give the correct answer later today

Bad ignition switch ? Engine won"t turn over..hmmmmm. maybe a bad distributor cap,..points,coil,etc. I am really guessing here, can you tell?

Sounds like a loose wire someplace in the ignition system to me. At least that's where I'd start looking, probably the switch first then the amp guage. Keith

If by not turn over you mean the motor will not turn at all then you say it has a good battery
I would say you have a bad connection from the ground to battery or battery to starter.

WELL.. If it is like my D-17 (series 4) it has a bad ignition switch.. Mine if you didn't get the key in just the right spot and hit a little bump.. *click* Key off.. Fuss with it for 5 minutes to get it to stay on and it'd do the same thing in minutes.

Took myself to AGCO, New switch, no problems.

I don't think it would have anything to do with the solenoid, but I suppose it is possible. I bought mine from grandad (who's uncle bought it new.. been in the family since day 1) and even with the optima battery under the hood and jumping it off a diesel pickup it would turn over ridiculously slow, hit and run.. Warm or cold, always slow. New HEAVY battery cables.. same.. Looked at the solenoid, seemed it was working, but changed it anyhow.. spins over great since. Grandad asked what I did to make it spin good, I told him.. He said it spun slow like that pretty well since new.. but it was never questioned, cause it would always start.

Can't wait to see what the issue really was.

Bad oxygen sensor or cam position sensor- not enough info to determine which. Did it throw an error code? Are any of the coil packs heating up?

That's why I stick with the Hart-Parr instead of getting this newer stuff like yours.

I've got a D17 and had the same problems. I had a bad battery cable connection. A year later I had the same problem. The ignition switch needs to be in just the right spot for it to be in the "run" position.
