Why is it I can't grow beautiful round tomato's..All mine come out looking like something from Rod Serlings Twilight Zone..They taste good , but look like the dickens..I've tried many different varieties of plants..Only the cherry tomato's look normal..Wifey bought one of those upside down hanging Tomato plants , and it's trying to grow upright..I'm so lucky , I'd die and they'de bury someone else..

Have grown Big Boy tomatoes for years, they always turn out a nice big round firm tomato. Now for the bad part, they do have a disease problem which will on occasion cause them to die prematurely from what I call a wilt, not positive of the true name. Otherwise a good tomato for canning or eating.

Another question..... What causes splitting.. Many of my "masterpieces" end up splitting the skin also making them less than desireable for human consumption..My stepsons dog loves 'em..

Be careful not to water too much when they get closer to ripe. They soak up more water faster than the skin can stretch. At least that is something I have experienced.

Splitting--uneven watering and poor variety choice.

Better Boy has been my tomato choice for years and just happens to hold the worlds record for production.

If you don't mind using garden aids cross linked polyacrylamides (CLP)will help even out the water cycle. You sometimes see them in flower pots and they look like a blob of gelatin. I think Soil Moist is one brand.

A heavy amount of organic matter in the soil should perform similarly.

Select a variety from descriptions that states resists splitting. Might be tough skinned for eating however.

The site below lists Better Boy as having crack and blemish free fruit.

Here are some of the tomatoes we grew and canned 2008. We are very dry and I've been watering all the plants and I have a soaker hose in with my blue lake bush beans. Should have a lot of beans. Hal
PS: The tomatoes are Big Beef, Big Boys, Jet Star and Super Steak. Some are Supersonic. Have them again this year.
