Pennsylvania Trip

Wife, kids & I are heading up to Pennsylvania next week. We will hit Philly for a couple of days, see the Zoo, Independence Hall, Franklin Institute & Valley Forge. Then we plan on going to Lancaster, Strausburg, Hershey. Any farm/ag related things we should check out up there?

Only Ag related in that it is plants although they do have vegetable gardens as well as fruit orchards and arbors, but Longwood Gardens is on the way from Philly to Lancaster and worth an afternoon or evening visit. If we drive over we try to spend an afternoon and evening to see the nighttime fountain/light shows.

YMMV,

Over in Strausburg the fair grounds where they have the thresher show each Fall. I can't remember the name but I'm sure someone will.
They used to be open all year with a lot of permanent displays.

If you make it to Lancaster you could go over to New Holland. I haven"t been through the factory yet but it is neat to see fields full of brand new equipment. Also, Outback Toys in Lititz. A friend of mine goes there about once a year and says it is pretty amazing. Plenty of good food to go around. Whoopie pies, shoe fly pies, lebanon bologna, ponhoss and scrapple a-plenty.

Check out mercer museum in Doyleston north of valley forge 7 stories high built with one man and donkey all concrete lot of cold joints full of odd things

I visited the Hershey Museum in the 1970s and remember the many Pennsylvania rifles on display.

I have since learned that my ggg grandfather was Isaac Haines and is considered an important rifle maker of the era and area.

I have considered a trip to Hershey in order to view one of the muskets he made but now find that the old museum has closed and a Chocolate Story Museum has opened instead. Bummer, as I had thought about asking you to photograph one of the muskets for me. So goes life.

I enjoyed Pennsylvania when I visited. From a Washington army cannon factory, shot chilling tower, to a 200 year old log cabin.

Enjoy your trip. If you have young kids a trip to Storybook Forest will be something they remember.

I've got a lot of good memories of Elias's annual "Spring" sale. He held it for 28 years and usually there were more than 3,000 buyers on hand. The new one near Gap just isn't the same.

We were just up there a few weeks ago. If you have a couple extra hours and the wife will agree to it, head up to Wenger's in Meyerstown. Not to far of a drive from Lancaster, and they have about any old type machinery you can think of. National Constitution Center is 2 blocks north of Independence Hall. The show there is worth a look.
