Slip clutch on a flail mower

When I purchased my flail mower it had a chain to drive the blade drum.I installed a slip clutch at the time to protect the gear box, and the tractor parts. I would like to remove it. I installed V belts back on the mower. Now my question is: Is it necessary to have a slip clutch at the mower gear box? or will the belts slip if a problem happens? Stan

I have no slip-clutch on my flail...if the belts are not set un-necessarily tight, they will slip enough to Smoke..!
A flail won"t hammer the PTO like a Bush Hog can..if you hit something too solid, my experience is that you will pull some knives off ..!!
I always use a slip-clutch on the Bush Hog and make sure it can break loose and slip..then re-tighten it some..

I've never heard of a need for a slip clutch on a flail mower, rototiller yes but not a belt drive flail mower. Dave

No slip clutch on my Mott. The belt tension is controlled by a spring-loaded idler, so the belt is never very tight. The belt slips anytime the cutter shaft is jammed, for example if a sapling gets wrapped around the shaft.
