John deere 4000

We don't have many lp fueled tractors around but there wasn't many 4000s sold around here compared to 4020s. If you were going to use it for the heavy horse it was made lighter and dealers didn't want to sell them.

True, but just depends on where you were. They were a stripped down machine made to sell cheap for a chore tractor for dairy farms and such. Supposed to be the power of a 4020 at a 3020 price or some such thing. Kind of a popular thing to do at the time. I don't remember if it was a 1750 or 1755 Oliver that was being stripped down at about the same time. Had pressed steel wheels instead of cast and other missing options. Seems to me the Clover White parts were light brown or something on those.

So given why the 4000 Deeres were made,I'd think a power shift and LP gas would be quite a rare bird.

The John Deere 4000 was meant to be sold to a person with 3020 implements. He could pull them a gear faster and therefore get more done. I have some of the old literature that states this sales tactic. What happened was guys bought them as cheep 4020 and tore them up.
IH did the same thing only it was a 826. As for how rare???? 4000 factory LP power shift would be rare. It would depend if it was a factory LP.

I have the same question, I was always told that a 4000 had the same drive train as a 4020 but was a stripped down,no frills tractor

(quoted from post at 00:31:45 06/16/10) Didnt the 4000 have smaller axles?

4000 didn't have syncronizers on reverse gears but 4020 did along with larger axles. 4000 had no sheet metal covering rockshaft and no enclosed battery boxes.

In all my years working at a JD dealership I never saw a 4000 powershift let alone a gasoline or LPG fueled one!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont know how much cheaper the 3020 was than the 4020. My dad went to buy a new 2520, and it was almost as much as the 4020. I think around 600 dollars difference. The dealer said they had about as many parts, that he is just mostly paying for the labor to build it!

Yeah, guys bought them and IH 826's because they needed PTO power for a forage harvester or baler. Otherwise, just ran the smaller implements in back of them.

The axle dia was stepped down outboard of the planetary drives to take the 3020 wheel center.
The trans didn't have reverse syncro's.

It's not a 4000. If you talk to the seller it's a 4020 that has one side panel off a 4000, ad has bee updated.

Also not an original LP tractor, it was converted from a gas tractor.

On checking JDparts.com it appears that some rear wheel centers are the same for 4020's & 4000's just the wedges are different
