im going to look at a farmall H tomorrow and the guy said the only problem is the starter button burns out for some reason. he replaced it and it got burned out too. anyone know what would cause this? it is still 6v

Maybe a high amp draw?
I'd assume the starter button pulls in a solenoid, but I don't know. Maybe a 12v solenoid instead of a 6v? That would increase the amp draw.

Does it have a switch of THIS style?

If so, the copper terminal stud that passes through the starter "belly" that the switch makes contact with is likely burned away/pitted and needs to be replaced... a job for an old-fashioned generator/starter shop.

A 12 volt switch on a 6 volt application won't handle the amps. Same with the cables, I like "O" gauge on the 6 volt stuff. Also make sure all connections both HOT and GROUND are clean tight and bright.

It could also be cheap parts too. I've gone through a couple on my M, but the last one has lasted a few years. If he gets the same brand it might be poorly made Chinese stuff.

If the starter button is the original type on the H the voltage doesent make any difference as they will even run a drill press. You didnt say if it was original type.

I had the same problem with my M. Switches would last about a month or 2. They are just cheap. I installed a generic 6volt solenoid using the starter switch for the energizer circuit. Its all hidden so you don't know its there and I have not had a lick of trouble in 4-5 years.

Cheapie switches. A good one will last forever.

Unfortunately, I don't have a source of good ones to recommend. I have tried taking them apart and cleaning the contact surfaces with some modicum of success.

O.K. You all go on and laugh now before you read. My old grand dad almost taned my hide for starting the M with normal motion. He says you hit that switch as hard as you can boy or you will burn out the switch..I am sure there is something to making good contact or being sure you close the switch hard.. ALL YOU ARE DOING IS BRIDGING A GAP so makes sense that getting a good solid contact would make the switch work longer..Have a good day and if that was the worst problem a man had in life wold,t things just be great.

i think were gona get a 6v solinoid just to be safe. anyway here she is. looks good parked behind the M although this one is painted up and the M isn't
