OT/ Is getting older really this bad?

I consider myself to be pretty young still (32),but it seems like since the beginning of the year I've went down hill worse than I have in all of my years.I've had shingles so far,an inner ear infection that took two months to heal, messed my knee up pretty bad and had to have a cortisone shot in that, got poison ivy so bad I had to take off work. Then last friday had 7 teeth removed. Finally found out what a primary care provider means too! At this rate I'm never gonna have the time, energy,or money to get anything accomplished around here.I hate to complain but really does it get any better? Oh,almost forgot they hired a new welder at work that constantly brags about his Subaru and plays the bongos in the parking lot on breaks! I mean us welders have never been the sane sort but bongos? Guess I just needed to vent, but anyone else having a bad year?

Well, I'm 46 and I'd say you are about par for the average guy's course...

Except for the bongos... Not sure what to say about that!!! ha...

At 78 I am still finding life great. Did get a taste of what a TIA might be like. Got dehydrated planting the garden in the hot sun and wound up a little confused. Wife called 911 and I had to spend 2 days in the hospital so could check me out and find nothing wrong.

I am more than twice your age and I have been getting better and better. Lost 70 lbs, remarried after losing a wife of 40+ years, and finding life starts over and is sweeter the second time around. Of course I could wake up dead tomorrow, but you won't hear me complaining.

Go get you a set and you can do the Dueling bongos at lunch !! When ya start to hurt it s time to start taking care of it . I started about your age but 20 yr. later I m still getting things done , but hurts like H--L , I did nt take care of myself when I shoud have . Learn to work with your head and not your back .

A lot of the aches and pains never go away you just get accustomed to them and new ones come along. Nobody wants to hear about your pains so don't even bother. Get use to them and move on as best you can. You don't have to many options and when you look around there are always those who have it much worse.

7 teeth ???? What in heck have you been doing, lack of good oral hygiene ???, some things you can prevent, and you have to remember to take care of yourself, eat healthy, get some exercise and stay fit, your quality of life will be much better if you don't, the older you get, these things can become more difficult, but you have to do it, I firmly believe that a person can accelerate aging by doing the opposite.

i am 54 get up around 4.00am drive 1 hr. 15 min. to work.then put in 8 to 12 hrs making blacktop all day then go home and farm the last 3 hrs of day light.you gotta do what you gotta do and you have to enjoy what you are doing just my 2 cents

Hello Billy, haven't seen ya in a while. Hope all is well.

I remember back when I was a kid and teenager in high school. I thought then that I couldn't wait until I became an adult and all my problems would be over. Woe is me. The older you get, the more problems you have. The key is that the more experienced you get, the better equipped you are (or should be) to come up with a plan to deal with the problems.

35 was my number where I found out I couldn't do what I used to do. Then about 45 it happened again. Now at 54 I can't tell any difference than 45 except that maybe I can't tolerate the heat quite as much.

I keep doing things that remind me I am not 35 any more but at least no one where I work plays bongos at lunch.

Too many things that guys complain about are the result of slacking off-season. At 61 I can do most anything I need to do. Some of them take a little longer......

Is geting older really this bad?? Well, yes and no. I am 72. In 1996 I was in a serious car wreck. Woke up in the hospital about 16 hrs later. This incident enhanced the onset of Parkinsons and didnt help the artritis any. In 2002 we retired, had a sale and moved south to NM.
But I find people everyday who are way worse off then I am. Just make the best of what you have.

I joined AARP this year. Yeah, life sucks but you get used to it. Remember when you were a kid working with your dad and your feet were cold? His feet were cold too.

Don't get me started on the teeth, four where wisdom, three because they cracked from soft metal fillings.Knee got screwed up runnin on the treadmill too!lol Missed the belt with half my foot, which promptly put my butt in the floor.lol

My dad quit playing basketball on the town team when he was 32 because he was having too hard a time getting up the next morning to do chores. Now he's 85 and still coming out to the farm every day to mow the grass. He looks his age but he still keeps going.

We go through those spells when everything seems to be falling apart but once we recover we forget about it. When I was in my mid thirties my back was giving me fits and Marilyn was putting my socks on for me. Now I'm 59 and this morning she was putting the socks on for me again, for the first time since I don't remember when. Hope you get over it quick. Jim

I'm 42. Never used to go to the doctor because I didn"t need to.Since the first of the year I"ve had my blood pressure medicine changed four times. Finally got one that works. Then I had gout. Two weeks later, spent four days in the hospital with three blood clots in right lung. Taking coumadin for that, got to have blood checked every week. Have an appointment with the pulmonary man this morning, but have to get a chest x-ray first. Now my wisdom teeth need to come out. Don"t even want to think about what could be next!

Do you have sinus problems? What most people don"t know is that sinus/allergy problems can cause lots of problems with your teeth.

I have a good friend who had terrible sinus problems and eventually lost all her teeth.

I laugh at alot of people who are older and complaining of health problems. These are the same people who drink alot of soda, smoke, are overweight, dont exercise and dont take any vitamins either. And then they wonder why they feel the way they do. Hey if a person doesnt want to take care of themselves, well then they can lay in the bed they made.
I know people who milk cows into their 60s and are in great shape and others who start having problems in their 30s. Some of it is genetics. My grandma died at 96 and mowed the lawn and had a garden till she was 93. It doesnt get easier when you get older.

It seems that every weekend at the farm something breaks down.

When we cut hay a week ago, one of our most dependable tractors locked up in 3rd gear after just 3 passes with the hay cutter. When James headed back to the house with it, it quit moving altogether in the middle of the highway and we had to push it across the road. There's more to this story, but that's enough.

Last weekend when we raked and baled and while none of the farm equipment failed, the refrigerator quit. $900.

We took off Wed to go fertilize the hayfield because it was supposed to rain. It was so damp, the fertilizer didn't fall right and the buggy was leaving a swath about 8 inches wide of heavy fertilizer. I'm concerned it will burn the grass.

Worst thing, I had the camera case with me in the hayfield. Took a couple of videos of James putting out the fertilizer, then walked around the hayfield picking up small piles of hay that the rake/baler missed. Last night when James went to get the video camera out of the case to download the videos, no camera. It must have fallen out of the case at the hayfield. Couldn't sleep last night for worrying about it.

Feel like if it weren't for bad luck, we wouldn't have any luck at all.

(quoted from post at 09:06:17 06/10/10) I apologize for the rant, just really down in the dumps today.

Is geting older really this bad??

Yes, but............it is tolerable only because it is better than the alternative!

At 63 I do a mile & half fast walk a day. I had 6 stents inserted 5 years ago and discovered diabetes last year. As with teeth, I found that getting an exam and cleaning once a year keeps my teeth intact. Xrays once every five years. Got to watch out OD'ing on radiation.

I once complained to a good friend who was 20 years older then myself that I was a bit stiff n sore in the mornings to which he replied "Old age aint for sissys, get used to it" lol

teeth problems can cause alot of problems. after pulling 5 teeth alot of my problems went away.esspecialy back problems

teeth can be hereditary. My dentist won't fix mine. My 10 year old daughters teeth are rotting from the inside out 7 year olds are falling out. not a lake of dental care thats for sure. Friend of mine 3 year old had 8 pulled (go figure)

well I'm 75 and can still do everything in my head, However the ol bode doesn't want to cooperate like it used too.The hardest part for me is getting up and down, like getting down under the tractor,Or just getting up from fixing something on the floor! I for one don't want to live to be really old, don't want to be a burden on the kids......Jim in N M

I could probably get as much done as when I was forty if I just wouldn't forget where I lay things down. You cuss more if you are working on a piece of machiney and a wrench falls to the ground underneath it. Also them tractors you jumped on as a kid, now you pick your steps.

Yeah, I know what you mean. When I bend down to pick something up, I look around to see if there's anything else I can do while I'm down there.

Thanks for telling me that my teeth problems are due to my sinus/allergy problems. About ten years ago, my doctor told me that my allergy problems should not be accepted as normal and could be treated. One by one, he prescribed medications and one by one I had reactions to them and had to stop taking them. Duh! I've got allergies! I'm sixty-five and have all my teeth including my wisdom teeth. A friend of mine is almost 101 years old and he is losing his teeth. Probably from his allergies! Ha! Seriously, I love your friendly and insightful posts. KEEP UP THE GOD WORK.

That is not weird, you might have a TMJ problem where your jaw and its teeth don't properly sit right when closed...stresses the hinge joint. Wife had head aches and broken teeth most of her life. Stumbled on a dentist that was interested in the problem and constructed a mouth insert to wear when not eating and continually kept correcting it for years....head aches went away! Each adjustment affected her whole body, muscles and tendons seemed to "shift" to a more comfortable position. A previous doctor told her it was all in her head (!) and put her down in his records as a hypochonriac. Leo

When you get old enough, and they've taken out everything that doesn't work,it makes you stronger, lighter and faster.

OLD, 32 WOW you sound like my brother in law. At that age I was chasing my wife who was 44 and had a hard time keeping up with her, still do.
I met her 91 year old Step brother and I had a hard time keeping up with him. also had a wild ride though Bakersfield, CA with her sister in law 80 years young.
don't worry I'm 72 and things will get a lot better as you get older and all those 40 to 50 year old women will start looking great.
Walt

Many things come into play as to how well a person might age. Eating right getting the excise you need and the way you need it. Using things to make you work easier instead of trying to lift what you should not lift. etc etc. But yes the older you get the worse your body gets just part of life. If you live in a concrete jungle that in its self will cause your body problems since we humans we not created to walk on hard stuff 24/7 and that is in fact bad for you back knees and all other joints in the body

I started to think the older I got, the busier I was. Then I realized I wasn't getting any more things done, it was just taking me longer to do the same stuff... darn.

I was in good shape at 49. Then I was in a very bad wreck, and nearly died.Hip and plevis broke up,punctured lung, etc. then blood clots.
I'm 61 now,and have some really bad days,but I'm glad I'm alive.
Hope the dope head that hit me,and wouldn't help me,and was able to walk away is still doing alright.Hope he is spending the money he saved on having nearly no auto insurance wisely.

> My 10 year old daughters teeth are rotting from the inside out 7 year olds are falling out. not a lake of dental care thats for sure. Friend of mine 3 year old had 8 pulled (go figure)

If you have a well, get yourself some fluoride drops and keep some water spiked with it in the fridge for the kids to drink.

Hello rrlund,
I also would add.............. you get smarter, less parts to think about moving!.
Guido.

That's for sure. You're actually able to concentrate on something else for more than six seconds at a time.

If you are overweight and smoke then you are older then you think.....In fact you might not live till 60.

Anyway my year has sucked too......We found out last year that my wife is a type 1 diabetic, 3 former coworkers of mine died in the last month, 2 older guys and a guy that died of a heroin overdose, he was 43...Loser. And I have accepted the grim reality that I have a dead end job and I may be going back to college to get a bachelors degree......Difficult and expensive. And of course there is a nnalert pig in the white house.

Makes me wonder if that medicine caused those blood clots ? Lots of side effects from blood pressure meds !

I tried 3 so far and am at a loss as to try any others or not ? Doctors seem to know NOTHING ! about their jobs.

I have come around 360. Slept with Grandma first caupla yrs. of my life, 60odd yrs later back sleeping with Grandma, If she sees this I won't need to worry about getting much older.lol

I agree, we live on well water. Doc said we had to use Floride if we wanted ours or the kids teeth to last. Remember that nasty stuff us "country" kids had to swish in grade school?

I am 48 years young, I have had more than my share of problems over the years. Don't remember how many bones Ive broke, both shoulder's broke two bad disks in my back gave birth to a 10 lbs of gallbladder and a 4 1/2 in tumor in my head and a few other things. Every day I thank God I am still above ground, I don't move as fast as I use to but I'm still moving still farming and chasing my grand kids. Life is what you make of it, so make it a good one. And as the old saying goes, make time to stop and smell the roses! Bandit

Sometimes it"s good to put things in perspective. I was at the MPLS VA on Tuesday to see the cardiologist, and while watching one blind Vet going down the hall with a cane, heard another....mid-20s amputee with his therapist...apparently a TBI, standing at the cafeteria door. Trying to talk, looked like she was giving him a tour...maybe to facilitate his stay there....maybe explaining what c-a-f-e-t-e-r-i-a means? Very humbling.

53 now , and I still try to squeeze thru areas when I stuff equipment in the shed that 10 yrs ago was easy for me to Do ,,My Sara's Italian cookin! is showing that I ain't STARV'n .. its got to where i choose to climb over quipment instead ,, that may be pretty demanding when i am 73...

Its all part of the fun. Sometime, along about 35 I realized that 32-33 was my absolute peak physically, mentally, etc. It wasnt a sudden wake up but more a realization that everything took a bit longer. I kept trying to do at 40 what I did at 33. It didnt work and I started getting wake up calls. I ignored the first two accidents on the farm but the third one I couldnt. 6 months in the hospital and rehab gave me a new outlook on life.
