Olivers and potatos

A page back some one noted that Olivers were popular with potato farmes in their area.

I noted the same thing here in Michigan. The later Olivers 1850, and newer and the Whites seemed to be popular with potato farmers. Anyone have an idea why they were so popular?

Don't really know with the tractors, but over here in Montcalm County,in the heart of potato country,Parr and Son sold Oliver and Case. They said they stuck with Oliver for their tillage and potato equipment.
Of course, having 7 Olivers and Whites,I'd just say,why wouldn't everybody want to use them?

Oliver had an extensive line of vegetable equipment and heavily promoted their products to veggie farmers.

They also had real good equipment and dealer support.

I"m certainly not a potato farmer but my cousins were big time and I do know that the pull behind diggers required a very very slow ground speed which Oliver and the JD 70 series had along with live PTO. I ran diggers for them when I was a young pup on Saturdays when I was off from school on the weekends that was soooo boring it was like creep speed with high rpms. IMHO

Here's an Oliver potato digger. Hal

Lots of slow speed gears and a 3speed TA. Over under direct.

In their day the only thing better was an IH hydro with infinate speeds.

Deere later came out with a power shift trans that lost a lot less Drawbar HP than the hydro's that was better yet

But in the 60's oliver for this was hard to beat

When irrigation first came to central MN, lots of farmers used the 1800 Oliver to power pto water pumps. Apparently there is a removable cover above the pto shaft, and a shaft could be inserted there, to be driven directly off the engine, rather than turning all the gears, etc. that are part of the conventional pto drive. Don"t know if that carried over to the 1850.

Yes,the 1850s had the engine speed PTO too. Just had to pop out a little tin disc cover.

60 years ago the oliver 70 would stay between the rows when digging and a deere B would climb out of the rows. The 70 pulled our 2 row digger with little effort. I still have fund memories of the potato fields and the long rows of bags to be picked up later in the evening after the milking was done.
