Farmall A / Woods Mower

I have swapped my Woods 59 mower through 3 "B"s with no problem. I have been trying to get it mounted on an "A" with a newly acquired Woods mount (supposedly from an L59) on ebay. I cannot seem to get the mower to run the correct direction. Is there a difference in PTO rotation on a super A or 140? The mount I acquired will bolt to the tractor, but only 2 holes per side line up front or back. I have found 4 ways to bolt it on, but only one allows the belt to line up with the center pulleys on the deck, and this runs it backwards. Anybody got a picture of the mounting bracket for a belt driven woods mower on an A Farmall? Maybe I got ebayed!

Are you using a straight 59 or an L59 Woods, and are you driving it off the standard PTO or off the right angle PTO.
I have a 40 A w/an L59 driven off the right angle drive.
I could take a pic or two tomorrow for you.

I am running a straight 59. Let me guess, the L probably runs the other way? Driving it off the right angle drive. I would appreciate a picture of your setup from the mount/pulley end. Thanks.

You could, but it really wouldn't help. The slotted plates where the pulleys go on the mount are offset by about 10 degrees each. Top front one aims for the left side on the mower pulley, the other to the right. The only way to change direction I can see is to cross the belt before mower mount, but the belt rubs itself that way.

Yes the L runs the other direction to send the cuttings out the "Left" side.
I'll take the belt guard off so you can see it better and as Ron says you should be able to flip the belt over on the drive pully on the right drive PTO to make the spindles/blades turn the other direction.
I'll post a pic tomorrow titled Farmall A Woods drive Pic.

You dont have the rite mount for the A or there wouldnt be a problem. The rotation of the belt pulley is the same. For left hand all you do is goaround the center spindle opposit from right hand. You just dont have the mount for the A tractor. Is the belt a B-225 as thats the size it takes.

You dont flip off the drive just change direction on the center spindle and of course the ones on the end also.

One more thing does your two idler pulleys have one grouved and the other one smooth this sure makes a big difference running the belt. Eaarlier models had two grouved pulleys and did cause problems. When i get one with the two grouved i always change to one smooth to eliminate the twist off the driver. Ive had a Woods for over 40yrs and the last 15 have sold new ones and trade used that mounts on A,Band Ctractors both right and left 59s and 406s.

Think I'm gonna have to side with Gene on this one, I just have the wrong mount. It does have one V and one flat pulley, by switching them you must cross the belt behind the tractor and it rubs. I have heard Ron's theory before. Imagine the belt were round instead of V. The twists in the belt will allow you to change from V to flat pulley, but the direction is only affected by which pulley the belt goes to.

Wouldn't think you would have to pull the cover off, as long as I can see the belts on the mount pulleys. I bet I have the same setup as you, except your deck throws left. Thanks again.

Woods has an excellent website with printable manuals for all models and applications, and I think left rotation requires lh thread spindles, you don't just put lh blades on a rh mower.

The 5 ft woods mower off my IH C used the shaft on the tractor that a flat pulley would fit on. This shaft was on the right side of the tractor. My mower shaft turned clockwise when looking down on the shaft. It was a right hand discharge mower. Changing the blades will be a real bad idea. Woods blades attach with a bolt that is self tightning. You hit something with the blades the bolts tightes up. Try to rotate the shaft the other direction, hit something and the blades fall off. I took my 5 ft mower off and replaced it with a 6 ft belly mower off an IH H. I had to use an 18 inch pulley attached directly to the pto. The mower shafts turn CCW, and is a left hand discharge. I think your IH A has a small shaft on the left side of tractor, and you mower shaft will rotate CCW. Look at your blades and see which way they need to turn to get the job done. My advice to anyone buying a woods mower is to first call Woods at 815-732-2141 and ask to talk to a service tech. I found them to be were very helpful. Not all woods mower deck will work on your tractor. I have listed on this sight's photo adds my 5 ft mower, but I think it will be the wrong rotation for your tractor. LOL George

Hey George. The 59 Woods I have came off my B, same pto and rotation as my A. The difference seems to be in the mount. If you look at my site, you will see a pic of the mount with top pulley angle left, and bottom pulley angled right. This stops me from switching the belt top to bottom and thus reversing the direction. With the right mount, I think you could run either a left or right throw mower.
