No one open today so I can't try filters yet, instead I decided to try running it again. It started right up, ran smooth, didn't lug down when I operated the hydraulics, so I continued digging out the rest of the old footer. After about 30 minutes I noticed it was starting to lug the engine again and in about another 15 - 20 minutes it was as bad as yesterday, I think the engine running rough was due to being lugged down. My oil temp gauge for the hydraulics is not getting hot nor am I noticing any other problems.
Could a problem with the unloading valve cause this, or a blocked hyd. filter?

I would still bet that you have bad fuel or plugged fuel filters. I have seen them get better after setting and then clog up after a little use. If you had a hydraulic problem it would show up sooner and you would have something getting hot. Check by carefully touching the hydraulic valves and lines when it is lugging. If it is a hydraulic problem you should be able to fine something getting hot.

Check and see if there is a checkvalve on the injector pump,if so clean it.They can stop up,and give the engine a, lug down,or"loadup"

I agree with JD. What ED and bottem or talking about will cause the engine to slow down and stop. It is a very common problem when the injector pump seals are breaking up. I have seen this many times but normally it happens in the first five minutes of running. But it is a good thing to check.
JD is correct on the filters. I had an engine that ran fine for about an hour. Then would bog down under load. Ran fine no load. Changed the filter and everything cleared up.
I would think if it was the unloader valve was bad. It would show up as soon as you started using it. Unless the valve is sticking or the filter is clogged.

Change or drain off the fuel filters and check the flow at the filter. It should be a good fast steady stream when you remove the filter. I'd expect that it's just dirty filters, a bad tank cap that's causing a vacuum or trash floating around the strainer in the tank. Take your pick...
