Way off topic, Big Block Chevy

Right after the old tractor infection problem comes this problem I have, the love of Big Blocks. Can't you just hear it getting kicked down and running through those headers? You forget about $3 gas with that lovely sound.....for a little bit. I'd say the thirst of this motor is about tied with that 1850 gasser pulling a big disk. There's the tractor tie in.

I had a 59 Chevy Impala with the 348 CI big block. My friends called that engine a "Boat Anchor". Coupled with the transmision that was about all it was good for. If you went into a curve and stepped on the gas it would try to plow straight ahead. Sorry I don't have any good memories of that beast. Now the redhead I bought it from was a different story!! She was from New Orleans.

When we got married, wife had a '61 Chev Biscayne 2 door w/348 High Preformance-it was an old SD Highway Patrol car. It had a posi-track rear end and it would leave twin blackies for a half a block if you really got on it. It also would pass anything on the road except a gas station. Best milage we ever got with it was about 10MPG and that was at an average speed of around 80. At 65 it would get you about 8 MPG. Good thing it had a 27.5 gallon gas tank on it. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

When I met my wife, she had a '61 Impala with the 348 big block. You're right, it didn't handle worth a hoot.

My youngest brother recently bought a 1978 Camaro with a 427. Car is a tube chassis car and weighs 2,000 with iron block and heads. It has 9.5 compression and no nitrous. It has ran consistent 5.90's in the 1/8 with this combination, before he bought it. We are trying to get some small things updated on so we can get it on the track. His first run, I am convinced we will have to dry out the seat. He has never done any drag racing, just gokarts. We are ready to see how it does.

I too am a Chevy fan.

Though most of my experience is with small bolcks, I'm especially fond of Chevy's "other" big block the 348/409/(Z11) 427 W block.

Nothing sounds like a HP 409 at idle.

My buddy had a plain Jane "61 Biscayne w/327. Fooled a lot of other guys with their GTO"s, Camaro"s, etc. Of course that was when everyone drag raced at every stop light.

Hugh, I dated a redhead when I had a 59 chev. I still have the redhead. The car was a boat with a jello-mushpot suspension. Jim

Day after I graduated from high school I picked up my brand new 1970 SS Chevelle 4-speed 454. When I got finished with it engine was turning a little over 600 HP. Wife and I took it for a drive on Menorial Day. Everyone either wanted to buy it or drag race with me. Wife keeps reminding me that I'm not 19 anymore. But when I'm driving the Chevellle I am.

If you like big blocks,go to youtube and search Dougs El Camino, and you can see my 427 Solid roller,4 speed at the track.Don't know how to post it here.

Brought 2 gen5 454s home last week came out of a boat. no idea what I'll do with them.

When we got married we traded her '57 2 door with a stovebolt 6 for a '66 Chevelle with a 327-325hp. That little car would just fly, and didn't look like it would, but I sure wish I had the '57 back!

Can"t beat a BBC. I prefer my with a 6-71 and 600 horsepower pro-fogger nitrous. 2 1/2" zoomies or 2" headers when I want to hear my self think.
