John Deere 800 swather

Can anyone tell me is it possible to take off the crimper and the two canvases on the platform so as to only allow the hay to lay flat down rather than windrowing? I am still trying to figure out if I benefit from crimping and windrowing, or if I would be better off just laying my alfalfa down flat and possibly speed up the drying process. Thanks.

I will guarantee you are benefiting from crimping. I run a trailed disk mower and long for the loft I used to get from the old IH 990 moco. We did take the windrower off the IH, not sure how the JD is set up.

I know the crimper comes off but not sure if the crop would flow with the canvases removed. Lots of people swath oats with the crimper removed.

We did that every year for 15 years to swath mixed grain. The crimper drive belt has to be tied up out of the way so it's drive pulley doesn't wear the belt.
I can't imagine how removing the crimper could improve hay drying???
Adjusting the discharge chute width or height will make more difference.
b.t.w you can save a lot of wear and drag by adjusting the header lift springs to carry some weight. Instead of full header weight riding on the skid plates.

When you take off the draper, you"ll find braces underneath. They will impede the flow of the hay. ie- no, it will not work. Crimper does help the hay dry- why would you drop that? Taking a narrower cut will help. Also consider buying an old hay conditioner and running that down the windrows. Did that behind our 14 foot 800 when baling behind it, especially the end rows, since turning on them flattened the hay and made it dry slower. Usually chopped haylage rather than baling, but baling behind swather does take more drying time.
