Probably about this time on the 3rd Yamamoto, with a big, massive fleet was still steaming hard toward the West with his plans to capture Midway.
And Ray Spruance with a much smaller fleet pretty much knew knew their plans so he was lurking to the North and East.
What ensued on the morrow was the Battle of Midway.
Bright young men on both sides went out and did incredibly brave things and died.
And in the end, with plenty of pluck and a lot of luck the American Navy won a battle that crushed the Japanese Naval Air Force and crippeled their offensive capabilities.
So on the eve of the battle give a thought to those bright, brave pilots and seamen who fought and died 68 years ago tomorrow.

Thanks for reminding us. Every man and woman who served in WWII was a hero in my books. Most of my relatives were farming at the time but I had one uncle who served in Germany in the infantry, was wounded and came home highly decorated. I am especially sympathetic to those who served in the Philippines fighting those heartless Japanese.

I have restored a military Jeep and am always asked to drive it in our local Memorial Day parade, usually hauling some honored veterans. I stand in awe of their service, especially so of the older WWII and Korea vets who are having more and more health problems. Those guys seem to still find a way to climb into a Jeep, and I know it's not easy for them.

I always admired John C. Waldron from Ft. Piere,SD who led Torpedo Squadron 8 against the jap fleet with no fighter cover and all were shot down and everyone was killed except for George Ga?( I can't use the Y in his last name). They had a job to do and they died trying. The bridge between Ft. Piere and Piere is named after J.C. Waldron.

Thanks for posting. All my relatives who participated in WWII were in the European theater, so all of what I know of the Pacific operations is what I read.

SBD dive bombers from the Enterprise and Yorktown sunk three of the four Japanese carriers in a period of five minutes. The fourth carrier got off two strikes which crippled and eventually led to the sinking of the Yorktown by a Japanese submarine. The fourth carrier was sunk shortly thereafter.

We owe a BIG THANKS to all veterans everywhere!

Would you be ashamed of your last name if over the years it became associated with something that many of us find distasteful? Remember, several decades ago, gay had a completely different meaning. Don't slight someone, especially someone we would consider a war hero, simply because you don't like his last name. The man's name was George Gay and neither he nor his family should be ashamed of that.

I knew a man who was on the USS HAMMANN DD-412,He told me about being tied up to the YORKTOWN trying to get her underway as she was dead in the water, when a japanese sub fires torpedos at the carrier and at least one hit the HAMMANN and took the bottom off- she went down in under 4 mim, he said he was on the forward gun mount and he kicked his shoes off and stepped in the water. surprisingly just about all the crew got off but the destroyer had armed depth charges on the deck and when the charges reached the depth set on them they blew up and killed a lot of the men in the water. He said that in his mind the jap sub never seen the HAMMANN as the smoke from the YORKTOWN was rolling over on his ship hiding it. This bears out because a lot of accounts don"t mention the HAMMANN. If you look at the pictures of the YORKTOWN burning you can see the bow of the HAMMANN if you look real close. -mike
