Thinking about getting one of those home generators like a guardian that comes on
automatically when the lights go off.My lights have went off three times in the last 3 weeks with Dp&l in ohio.I have a 6500 watt honda, but it's a pain to use,the battery is always dead or it's out of gas. What is a good brand of self contained generator to buy? Are the ones lowes sells any good? Thanks.

Generack on naturel gas it still needs a batterybut it can stay on trickel charge. here in my aera the gas co sells and have a maintence plan. i dont know the price of the plan im in north east il.outher gas co. probley alse do it.

The ones i've seen run on propane,so i was going to install a 200 gallon tank. They automatacally start up once a week to charge the battery and do a system check. Not much to maintain there.

We installed a Seimens 20K unit last fall. Also installed an SE rated auto transfer switch. Switches the whole house load before the pane. "Simpler" to install rather than the transfer switches that only switch X number of circuits. Came equipped to run on LP or natural gas, just took a very simple adustment at the carb to change. Installed a 500 gallon tank as we have no NG. Specs state it will run about 12 days continuous at 1/2 load. Auto exercises every Monday at 8:00 AM. Pretty simple maintenance, oil change every year or 200 hrs. Battery charger included. 999 CC OHV engine, manufactured for the application. Here in SW MO, severe storms have had our power off for over 3 days in a very warm May, and ice storms 2 years in a row have taken power off for a combined total of 19 days. Since installed, it's cycled on three times. Automatic transfer takes place after power is off for 15 seconds, generates until power is restored. Generac makes a lot of the units you see branded under different names. Prices are also pretty much fixed. We studied long and hard before we plunked down the money for it. Mark

Good to see somebody that plans ahead.
Instead of trying to borrow or buy a generator AFTER the lights go out. Then back feeding through a welder receptacle.

AAH, the old Dayton Plunder & Loot.
(I used to live in Wash.C.H.)
Generac that runs on nat gas(if you have nat gas), with a small solar trickle charger connected to the batt.

solar charger works great, tops off the batt every day the sun comes out.

Who makes the engine for Generac? I got a Coleman with a Yamaha engine. Accelerates very quickly LOL.
I have gotten a lot of use out of it too.
