On a 1974 Chevy 1/2 ton truck with the 350 transmission hoked to a 350 engine I seem to have lost reverse gear. This transmission is a 3 speed with L1, L2 and D amd NO wires to transmission, only one vacume hose that has just been replaced. What do I look for to fix this, orignal transmission did the same thing and it is laying here in the barn. Is this something I can do or does it have to go to a shop? Forward gears all work good. If try to back up sounds like trying to move a 20 ton load.

Reverse is the usually the first thing to go on a 350. No fix but to tear down and overhaul.
The vacuum line is the modulator. If the vacuum line or modulator fail, the trans will still shift with the lever, but not by itself.
The good news is, they're not that big a deal to overhaul. I did my first one by making a jig to hold the trans on an engine stand and sat down with an overhaul manual and overhaul kit. Jerry rigged a few special tools as I went.

On a TH350 the reverse clutches are in the bottom of the case - the first thing to go in on an overhaul. No reverse means that the reverse clutches are fried. You'll nee a total overhaul to fix it. If it happens to be a TH400 tranny, they have a reverse band, but I don't think there is an adjustment for it. Again. an overhaul is the only fix.
The transmission is a 350, only I do not know if short or long and it even tho has not been used at all some years has I would guess possibly 20,000 mile since an Amco rebuild possibly about 15 year ago by a neighbor before he junked truck and I got the transmission.
