Fuel tank repair?

I put the fuel tank on the 9000 - it leaks at the solder joint for the brass drain fitting. Removed tank, set it upside down, cleaned around it, the solder looked porous, heated it up, came apart, joint was all crappy.Wire brushed and fluxed both sides clean. heated tank and fitting, resoldered with regular plumbing solder, the solder sucked right in. I let it cool a little then gave it a little tug and it pulled right off. The solder didn't adhere to the steel. Do I need different cleaner or different solder?

Iam thinking you may have some fuel residue, the steel probly didnt tin properly.do you have an old time sodering iron? what i would do is to reclean down to shinny metal, use a very abundant amount of sodering flux, use a dope brush, not your finger because the small amount of oil off of your finger will contaminate the area, heat up a sodering iron an let flux bubble to help clean area more.this helps to tin steel thenclean the other part as well. dont get in any hurry,an watch how the soder flows in an arround joint. oh one thing that might help clean joint, get some brake cleaner to wash down be for the fluxing prosses,it is acohall based an shoulden leave anny contaminats . good luck dan

What I do to solder is make sure everything is shinny metal. I use solder acid it comes in a small plastic bottle available from most hardware stores. Use plain solder not with a core. stan

Thanks Dan, after a bout three more tries I got it.I used a large screwdriver as a soldering iron to push it around on the steel and got it tinned then the same on the fitting. I was apparently using too much heat and burning the flux. I just had to take it slower like you said.
