OK - Pretty much have decided but want your opinions?

Got a call last night from the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight coordinator as my Dad is scheduled to go to D.C. on June 22. Asked if I would interested in being a "guardian" and have to reply by this weekend.

Sounds like a once in a lifetime opportunity to honor our local WW II veterans and probably wouldn't have to get Dad anything he doesn't need for Fathers Day by going along and helping out.

Saw in the archives, some have done this before.

Kruser:

If I had your opportunity I would not think twice. It is something that you will remember for your entire life and you may never have the chance again.

I lost my Mother, a WWII veteran army nurse (McArthur's Army, Australia, New Guinea and Philippines) on May 16 2009, Armed Forces Day.

I wish I had had your opportunity.

Talked to a guy just the other day who had went to it. Said his son who was with him had to pay $300 which probably isn't all that bad for being with his dad who was in WW2. He did say it was about time the gov. set up something for the WW2 vets

Hey Rich,
Yeah I get to pay and take a little training BBUUTT the thing that makes me wonder is that the MO Ozark Chapter will be there the same day. LOL!

LOL well I do not have to worry about that my dad was never in and he is long gone. Wonder if they will ever do the flight thing for the Nam vet. Not that is would matter to me since I never saw real action but I think the one that did should be able to see the wall for free since they did give all and many did not come home and if they did they came home to people spitting on them. Ya proud to have served but mad because we as vets keep getting screwed

I was on a Honor Flight from SD a month ago with my 90 year old father. You better go. As a guardian you will be expected to help load busses and wheel chairs and help with the pushing. I was honored to be able to help.

My father never served he had health problems that prevented it. My grand Father did serve in WWII I wish I could still take him. He has been gone now for nineteen years this Christmas, Dec. 20,1990. IT IS ABOUT TIME THIS GOVERNMENT DID SOMETHING FOR THOSE Vets. It is too bad that it took so long that many where already gone.
GO GO you will never regret it.

Do it. The last one out of Springfield was welcomed back by a lot of people who lined up to honor the WWII Vets as they returned (to airport) about 8 PM. I have applied to be a guardian and pay for my flight only. Our VFW post sponsered 2 vets. I do not think the gov is involved in this honor flight. It is one busy day for the vets but if you are going to DC you might as well see as much as you can.

I can't for the life of me think of a reason why you should not go! Be sure to take a box of tissue along.

By the way, tell him thanks!

Father of a friend of mine took an honor flight and they describe it as the most wonderful experience he ever had. Everyone involved treated him like the hero he is.

Do it! Take the opprtunity to share this wonderful time with your Dad.

kruser: I think that the Honor Flight is a tremendous experience for all veterans that are able to go. My FIL his son and grandson all went last November, along with BIL's FIL. The four of them were the first 3-generation from one family to go from our location in SE IL. I didn't go but the stories and memories that were generated from that trip will last all of us for the rest of our lives. PS my nephew is also a Gulf War vet. Take advantage of the opportunity to do something with your Dad. Sorry for being long-winded,but it is a great experience. Dale

GO! Hopefully you'll get enough time to see the rest of the monuments and some of the sites. I was able to attend the 50th Anniversary of the Dday landings at Normandy and met /talked to plenty of vets. Something you'll never forget.

Dave

As a mid-60s Army Green Beret, born 1944, I tell local WWII Veterans- if it wasn"t for you, I would never have had the chance to serve. It is a no-brainer. Some folks from central MN recently did the trip- common response was, who got more out of it, the Veterans, or the sponsors? We owe them- do it!!!

It is a good program. A lot of us make donations so the poor old WWII vets still around could go. Then one of the rich guys in town went on the free flight. Decided I wasn't going to donate for guys like him to go for free when he could afford to pay for a dozen trips to DC. I thought it was for the needy guys and I know some who are who would appreciate the chance. Kinda soured me on the way they handled it locally.

James,

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for both you and your dad.

Please take a lot of photos during your trip.

Please offer my thanks to your dad for his service.

Pictures are a necessary destraction........ Take them and keep them all. I wouldn't even hesitate to put them on a CD and sell them on ebay (business opportunity tip, I want a cut if it takes off.

GO!!!!!

Absolutely the chance of a lifetime.

There is a similar group that flies vets from Louisiana to DC.

At the farm, we get the tv stations from LA and have seen several reports on the "Honor flights". I think they are fantastic.

You are nuts if you don't go. Lost my father in 03. He was a veteran of the Pacific. Survived the island battles. Sure wish he was here to go.

I don't think that veterans can pay for the trip, even if they want to, and it is not government sponsored. Financed by donations only. Guardians do pay though. at least that is how it is in our area.

If he is a WWII vet, he has aready paid the price!!!!!!! This is a great program his personal income has nothing to do with it.
