OT--Craig's List

Last night about 9 pm, I submitted two motorcycles to Craigs. I have since received Five inquries by email. They all have confusing or immature wording but I responded to two of them. Both wanted to wire money and have the bike pickedup.
I am new to this type selling and I am uncomfortable with it.
Is this unusual or is most of Craig's List this way

Yea, in the last say 6 months the unsavory type seems to have hit Craig's List. I started checking to not show an email address and started using a phone number. This because as soon as I post something I get a bunch of unspecific but plausible emails asking something like "Do you still have it?". If I reply I hear nothing but since the reply comes from from my real email address they get to add that to their spam list and they know it's a good active email address.

This seems to be happening to everyone as I even see people saying in their ads to reply with specif words in the subject of the emails so they know it from a real person.

I hate to make people jump through hoops but for junkier and lower cost items I hate all the phone calls at inopportune times--I'd rather answer emails when I have time.

Jiles. Don't I REPEAT DON'T accept any thing but CASH. Phone number is a great thing to list. Like the poster says, if they call ya then it's a good chance it's ligit. LOTS OF SCAMMERS OUT THERE. I guess they figure theres a SUCKER BORN EVERY MINUTE< SO I'LL RIP EM OFF. Had the same thing requested. I am sending you a check, Cash it and return the difference. also "MY representive will come and pay for the item but the check will be over the amount. Sorry about the mix up, it was my bookkeepers error".The scammers have a blizzard of BULL SHet. BE carefull dont be a SUCKER. Reguards LOU

I think I have a better way. Use the reply to this option on CL then I e-mail tham my phone number or have them give me one. Not to sure I would wan t to put my phone number out there for everyone to play with..One thing is certain the scamers are out there. I have started putting ring in the add scamers forget it.. Seemed like it might have cut down on the inital wave of junk. There are a lot of people out there tht are doing nothing but colecting valid e-mail and phone numbers for someone,s list.

I delivered and took a check for a Ford 4000 today. Sold it on craigslist.
I always check the box so no one can email me only call my cell #. If the scammers start calling phone numbers I will adjust my tactics accordingly.
The fellow who bought it was a straight up family man school teacher who already had a 5000.
Craigslist worked good for him and it worked good for me.

CL is for local people, if they need it shipped(wire money)they are scammers. eBay is for the world wide crowd.

Not so much. I've sold several items on Craigslist where the buyers were more than 1000 miles from me. In 2 cases, buyers drove to me to pick up item, 3 sent money orders and I shipped items. I've bought and sold approximately 100 items per Craigslist with not the first scammer. Craigslist gets a bad rap. No MORE scammers than any other type of sales venue. You'll get them occasionally even with a for sale sign on an item setting in your yard. Scammers, thieves, and con artist's are everywhere there's money changing hands.

If they want to wire money they are scammers. The immature sound of the emails is due to the fact they are from a foreign country. If I suspect they're scammers I do not bother responding.

Seller be ware now days.

Wiring money is usually the big red flag, with grammar and spelling errors together a close second. I'd delete those and stick to what looks like an E-mail you yourself would send, or, state in the ad that you can't reply to E-mail. The latter is the option I myself choose. Haven't had a "wormy" phone call yet ....

While similar and containing the same ads I prefer Craiglook. I find it easier to use as you can adjust the search distance to look at all items within that range or even search for certain items. If you don't find the item you just keep extending the area up to a maximum of 250. Above that and you search without a location given.

The first and only rule to selling stuff on craigslist is to put on your add that you WILL NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS AND WILL TAKE CALLS ONLY! You might get 100 scam emails. If they really want what you have to sell then they can call.

I do not have time to play phone tag with anybody, and I refuse to play that game. If a phone number is the only means of contact, I pass right on by.

It is very easy to weed out and delete the emails from scammers.

I don't want some psycho getting my phone number, so when I do craigslist, I let them send me an email.

After a couple rounds when I get a feel for what kind of person I'm dealing with I'll share my phone number.

The obvious scams don't even get consideration.

That is the absolute surefire way to NOT sell an item. Email is best way to go and in any emails that say as you got it is spam. A serious buyer will ask detailed questions and give you his contact info.

I use it all the time and look almost every day traded a 4-wheeler for a truck yesterday. While the ad was up got several emails saying did I still have it and that was all some asked were there any scratches or dents they should know about and when It came to a 4-wheeler only a new one won't have some scratches.
