had an uncle that cut hay with bushhog for many years. had the side covered exept in rear center to leave a windrow. would break the stems and dry much like a mower conditioner. used in any hay, worked really good with alfalfa.

have a neighbor who cousin that uses a bushhg to cut hay. its an old pull type and he raises the back end all the wy up and the front he puts almost all the way down. it works surprisingly well. though he doest get the regrowth like you would with other mowers.

poor people have poor ways

I always thought a Bushhog might bruise the alfalfa stems, but I guess a drum mower does about the same thing. A good sharp sickle makes a cleaner cut.

I tried baling some brush mower cut hay with a New Holland chain baler once and it just bunched it up inside and was out of round, had to eject the bale so it wouldn't brake the chain. Never tried it with a belt baler. Good luck.
