Neighbor s tractor has PROBLEMS

My neighbor's (widow lady) Massey 50's hydraulics wouldn't raise when her grandson tried to brush hog the other day. I drained the hyd. oil out of it this morning & drained over a gallon of water out before any oil started flowing. Don't know how it got that much water in it, it's shed kept when not in use. They hadn't used it all winter & spring till then. I've got a feeling the pumps frozen & cracked, or at the very least rusted badly. What do you guys think? Should I go ahead & pull the pump or try new oil? Keith

Try new oil first. Condensation can build up water level over the years until it gets to not work level. Tranmissions can get water in them and in winter water "freezes" transmissions (brother"s IHC H). One reason most tractors and other vehicles have a maintenance schedule that says drain oil from trannies and auxilary fluids at least annually. RN

Yep, I know, but she just lets it sit over the winter. Her grandson is good about mowing for her but just can't quite grasp the concept of maintenance to include useing a grease gun. LOL I just pulled the side cover off & part of the pump was laying in the bottom of the housing, so I guess that pretty much answers my question. Guess they'll find that a little main't is cheaper in the long run. Thanks for the reply. Keith

with all that water means alot of freezing in the winter and of corse it expands busting all sorts of good stuff. the best time ive found to change my fluid is in late fall. dont get as much temp changes so you dont get a lot of condensation before winter, and you have fresh oil for winter use.
