Has anybody here worked on a 875 Versitile transmission? I've worked on old chevy and ford 3 speeds and 4 speeds and did ok. Rebuilt my ford backhoe transmission. Tried to work on a Dodge 5 speed; couldn't even get it apart. How is this transmission to work on? It locked up and the front shaft twisted off.

They are a very SIMPLE constant-mesh tranny, but kind of BIG and bulky to work on.

I've OH'ed a few. I'd be REALLY interested to know what happened to your's to lock up AND twist off the shaft to the front axle!

I work for a versatile dealer, and have rebilt several trannys. I would guess the gears are stuck to shaft. You need to cut it apart and replace everything. I would see about getting a used tranny. We just rebuilt one and parts was about 10,000. remam. 15,000. good luck

Thanks for the replys. I do mechanic work, some welding, on cars and trucks for farmers around here. I suspect that it was run without grease, since he has hired help to farm for him. What do you mean by have to cut it apart? Do you mean cut the case apart?

Either Bob or I must have misunderstood you...

I thought you meant the input shaft from the clutch to the trannie was twisted off. If the front axle shaft is twisted off, your problem probably isn"t in the transmission.

They are very simple inside. I had a TON of hard hours on my 895 when it quit shifting. I feared the worst, but pulled the side plate off - and found there was a follower had come off that runs in the shifting plate to move the gears.

On top of everything looking brand new inside, all it took was 20 cents worth of locktight and putting the follower back on and it"s been fine for another 10 years.

A friend had the oil pump fail (either that or he ran it dry) on his 895 and it totally thrashed his transmission...

The farmer said that the front shaft of the transmission twisted off. He thought the pump failed. I haven't seen the tractor yet. I wanted to get some opinions before I decided if I wanted to attempt it.

I gears on the bottom shaft have to turn on shaft freely. If they don't you will have to cut shaft and gears into to get it out of case. don't cut the case.
