What use is there for:
1. Reach, bolster, auto guide or
2. Tugs, hames, eveners, neckyokes, nose bag, tail strap, belly strap?
3. Pitman, burr, crystal set, reverse pedal, spark advance, mail order, telegram, party line, check wire, counter checks, township grader?
4. Post maul, manure carrier, cob fork, hopper cooled, saw rig, cradle (scyth), oiler, pet cock, shotgun pail or can, root cellar, milk bottle?
Wait a minute, maybe I am losing it..I can't remember the others.

Auto guide, hopper cooled, shotgun pail would be kinda foggy for me?

Couple of the others I sure know what you are talking about, but lack a little in exact application (The horse would be configured in a totally new way if you left it to me! :) My sis grew up with a couple horses yet, but were gone about 4 years before I came along.

Now, Mister, I'm in the middle of that range and I can identify with about 80% of those things. LOL
Hey Leo,
Any relationship between a "shotgun pail" and a "thunder mug"?
Could an auto guide be a "curb-feeler"?
For sure, most of this stuff is not in everyday use anymore!

The only thing I am not aware of isshotgun pail. Auto guide means that the front wheels on a wagon steer like the front wheels on a car, each one moving individually on a frame with a tie rod from the toung to control them. A reach is the coupling pole in a wagon that hooks the front to the back and in an auto guide keeps the axle solid mounted, in a bolster guide (sumtimes refered to as a fifth wheel) wagon the axle and toung are fixed together and when the toung moves so does the axle and the wheels stay in a fixed position on the axle. A lot of highway wagons (Fertilizer) are like that because they will not weave going down the road like an auto guide. The hopper cooled means the engine was made before a tube style radiator was avaible and an open tank of water was used to cool the engine (All hit and miss engines are like this). About all the other termes are from horse farming. And I am only 66 years old.

You have a lot of knowlege that is lost on younger folk.
If you dont attend threshing demos, you should, as it would help the wanabees understand many things. Here's hoping you stay on the green side of the sod, as long as you care to.

Ha ha..no...the "shotgun" pail was about a 12" diameter pail about two feet tall with a metal cap or lid...we used it for carrying cream from the separator to be hung by the bail in the inside the pump house small tank that fed water to the outside livestock drinking tank. A cast iron sash weight on a small rope that ran up to the ceiling and back through a pulley. The rope had a hook that engaged the pail bail and kept the can of cream from tipping over as it floated in the water. That water was the coolest as it came directly from the well. It seldom, if ever, froze in the unheated pump house.
