Which small tractor works well for mowing?

I’m looking for a small tractor with a belly mower underneath. I know Farmall made some small tractors just for this function along with Allis Chalmers. Are there any other tractor brands that made such a tractor? I know any tractor will work for mowing but I’m talking about something along the size of a Farmall A or B or something else. Please write your opinion on which brand and model would work best for mowing. I’m located in Minneapolis, MN if you have one for sale. Thanks

We have a Farmall C with a Woods L59, and it works quite well. It would be nice to have live power but we get by, the hydraulic is live which I consider a must.

Lots of AC Models B and C on craigslist in MN, also some red ones, with either sickle or rotary belly mowers. Usually $1500-2500 range.

Don't know how good it is, but I love this picture........

You cannot beat a modern compact with a hydrostatic transmission for mowing with a belly mower but such machines are expensive.

As Ryan suggests, a Cub lowboy is a good alternative but you will be HP limited to a 48" mower unless you cut your grass often.

I would try to find a Ford 2000 LCG with Select-O-Speed transmission. Such machines have around 34 PTO HP, low ground clearence and multiple gears suitable for both mowing and three point tiller operation. Finally, the LCG machines, especially those equipped with the S-O-S transmission usually can be had for the price of a decent Cub lowboy.

That's an 6x1 S-O-S, the immediate predecessor of the 2000 and identical aside from the grille and paint. Though difficult to determine from the picture it does not appear to be an LCG but with the 24" rears and 13" fronts, it is nearly the same. The power steering is an attractive option.

A person has to consider the soil under the grass when deciding on a tractor and what it weighs. I have a Woods L59 under my B Allis Chalmers and I have had to use the Craftsman most of the time for mowing this year as the rear tires of the B makes deep tracks that makes the yard hard to ride any mower after the ground drys out and is solid with the soil I have under my grass. It would be better to have turf tires but they will still make tracks here just not quite as deep. I drove my C Farmall across my yard the other day and run the lawn roller behind the Craftsman several times over where I drove and you can still see the tracks.

Small Kubota diesel with hydro trans and power steering. They are bullet proof. 5 acres a week here and 2000 hours on it with light bulbs and a leaking hose the only problems in 8 years.

To me--That's the most attractive old Ford tractor I've seen. But how could you use it without destroying it's beauty??

Farmall C with a mower for sale in the photo ads to the left in Cedar, MN not far from you. I have no connection to the tractor or seller, but thought it looked like a decent tractor at a decent price.

Unless you are doing it for the pleasure of doing it with old iron, a hydro zero turn will out mow any tractor of that size. You can adapt your speed much better, and spend less time turning around.
However, it you want to mow with an older tractor, Woods make adapters to fit on many of the older small tractors like Farmall A's,B's, and C's. And also AC B's And C's and of course the older Deere's.

I've got a sweetheart 1979 Ford 3600 Diesel I'll sell you. 37 hp, 8 speed, power steering, live pto, differential lock, 1 hyd. remote. Located in NE Mpls. You could drive it home.
