we are working on the water pump of one my students outboards. while changing the water pump after reinstalling everything it would not shift out of forward so we took the lower unit off to move the shifter to correct this problem but can get the shift linkage to move in any direction. so my question is how do i get it unstuck from forward gear.
can anyone help me out on this thanks

It would help alot if you'd tell us what motor you're working on. If it's a Merc, make sure the controls "and" the lower unit are in neutral. There is a sloted piece that has to mate up with the shifter comming down from the motor, You probably have them missalligned. It's been quite awhile since I've worked on them so it may be the opposite with the slotted piece being above, but you'll see what I'm talking about when you get it back apart. Let us know how it works out. If you want, email me with yoyur phone#, I have books on about all of them. Keith

It's been a long time since I worked on one, But it seems that a Mercury lower unit will shift itself into either forward or reverse when removed from the powerhead. Can't remember for sure. Take the lower unit back off and turn the drive shaft from the powerhead and see which way the prop turns. then place your shifter in the correct position, and put it back together.

sorry yamaha 15 hp model 15sh
i copied and pasted from the boat forum that i also put this in

Do you have the linkage hooked up correctly? I have been cautioned by our Merc. dealer not to try and shift while the engine is not turning. Pull the plugs and try turning the flywheel while trying to shift to neutral.

If it has a splined shaft, pull the starter rope and notice the direction of the flywheel. Now with lower unit off, turn prop with one hand in foward direction while turning the spline shaft with a pair of pliers till the shaft rotates in the direction the flywheel was turning. It should turn about 30 degrees or one hour of clock hands.Place shift lever on motor in foward and reassemble. If it is still stuck, you probably missed the alinement when you bolted it up and could have pushed the splined shaft into the lower unit.
