plow or disc?

How do you determine whether to plow or disc a field? I have a food plot that has had clover in it for around four years now. The grass has really overtaken it so I sprayed it with glysophate over the weekend. I plan on broadcasting beans in it. Thanks, Barry

It's a proven fact that crop yields are better on plowed ground and weed control is better, however it is the most time consuming and expensive form of seedbed tillage. What do you want, max yield, or max return/$$ spent? Soil quality should be your main focus. (fertility, moisture movement capibility)
Neither plowing or disking especially; promote good moisture movement. Both form a compaction layer that moisture doesn't penetrate well.

If it has been in pasture, or grass for years, I would turn it over with a plow. Compacted soil is tough to work, and tough to get air into. Jim

With as you say I would guess there is a lot of cover trash and unless you have a heavy plowing type or offset type of disk you are not going to cut through the trash. Normal disk will not do it.

The field is basically a food plot. It is about two acres in size. About half of it has been rotated between beans, buckwheat, turnips and sugar beets. The clover part has been undisturbed for about four years except to brushhog it. After the intial plowing four years ago the half I have been rotating has been disced every year. Sounds like I should plow the clover part under and then disc everything.
Thanks, Barry
