What do you think of the PFWD front axle on the 40 series John Deeres. This would not be used for tillage. The ones on the combines seemed to hold up good.
 
I really liked them, had several. 4240, 4440, 4640 and 4840's. More for the smoother ride than a lot of extra traction. Had to replace a few seals but not bad. The bigger tractors for heavy tillage could be weighted down with weights, front fuel tank and liquid ballast in the front tires....James
 
Just like jwal said, they help turn in sticky situations a bit, they ride better, they don't really help that much with traction but you do get a heavier front bearing assembly. If you aren’t relying on it for traction they aren’t a problem. If I remember correctly though the PFWD didn’t turn as sharp because of the issue with the tires hitting the tractor, I could be off on that a bit though.
