Gonna try a little turkey hunting tomorrow. Not real expierienced though. My question is does weather ie. wind, rain, etc. effect turkey hunting at all?

Thanks
Stan

To me, turkey hunting is the most challenging of all of hunting. It becomes addictive. I'm sure weather does make a difference, but I have killed them in all types of weather. Practice, practice, practice your calling and use a good shotgun with a turkey choke. I tried many different shells until I found what patterned best in my gun (Binelli Supernova with Jellyhead choke). Most of all, enjoy being out there!

Turkeys have bad hearing. The wind and rain (rain mostly) tends to drive them to open places in that they can look for predators instead of trying to hear for them.

Yes weather can in fact cause problems. When wet they hang back an do not move out in the open as much as that also hold true about if real windy. Turkeys see so well any movement can scare them off and fast. I stopped turkey hunting a number years ago because it got way to easy for me. Sort of bad when you go out opening morning set up for 30 minutes and walk back to the house with a bird with 1 inch spurs and a 11 inch beard. Also the week before I took the boy out and he shoot a bird from the same area and about the same size. And did it pretty much the same 30 minute type hunt

I went last fall for the first time and was quite successful.Never been in the spring yet. When I called last fall I didnt get any response at all from the flock,it was just kinda like deer hunting, waited for em to come by and nailed em.They say this year the hens have gone to nest early because of the warm spring.Well anyways it will be a good time with me and my son out there making fools of are selfs,LOL.

Thanks for the tips.

Stan

I guess I am kinda like old. Just not much to it if you have a place where their is turkey and not a bunch of people around. Will try and attach a photo made from my breakfast seat. They come in the yare all thet time.

Second try on attaching photo. Got to work someway.

I was planning on turkey hunting today but the weather decided to blow gusts to 60mph snow mixed with rain.
Set up real early with decoys between the roost trees and feeding areas.
Careful you don't get busted by a hen who will warn the entire flock. A Tom isn't too bright when he's chasing a hen.

There are so many turkeys in south central kansas this year that we have had them in the back yard in town. There were over a dozen standing on a small patch of grass in front of a bank at a busy intersection one morning a month ago, during the rush hour.

Interesting about the rain. I can count on seeing flocks of them in the pastures when its a drizzle. Never figured it to be a hearing problem

Old , Why dont you get one of them TV shows so you can show everyone how easy it is , you dont want to leave out all those deer you shoot too , I dont think anyone else has every mastered such feets !!

Well after living on the same place for 30 years one gets to know the land and hunting can become easy. but I have also done things that conservation says one can not do like crawl up on a turkey which I have done but that was 15 plus years ago when I could still do a lot more then I can now. Crawl up on a Jake form about 1000 yard. slow belly crawl and took me 30 plus minutes

Hunting is giving them a chance. waiting for them to come along and boom is really not a sport, may as well go to a fenced in deer farm.

Old do you really think we are all that stupid that we would belive you crawled 1000 yds. up on a turkey !!

I have a nice one here for you.... but you"ll have to get in line.

Now, I don"t hunt just due to the fact I"m lucky to have time to sleep these days.

But from what I understand the one that visits my place in the mornings is rare. He"s an albino.

Bunch of my buddies want first crack though...

Good luck.

Only one that might be stupid is you since you where not there and I was. Ya if might have been 800 or 700 but it was a very long ways on my belly and that was also 15 plus years ago in tall grass. But like I said you where not there and I was and I got the turkey and did in fact crawl up on it

Old, you are a real turkey hunter. I used to have a frend in West Plains Mo. He was half Indian and he taught me how to crawl up on a turkey if the turkey would hang up out a long way and not call in. Good hunting. WaltMo
