Corn population

What would be a recommend population amount per acre for corn planted on 38" rows. I know thats wide but planter is set there and I'm gonna use a 2 row picker and its spacing is about 36-38". Just wondering population per acre and the spacing between seeds. Waiting to get the manual in the mail for my IH 244 planter that I got this spring.
Thanks
Ryan

Depends on what yield you are looking for, how much fertilizer you applied, and whether it ishybrid and or RR seed. 24,000 is a jump off point.

I'm thinking with 38" rows and wanting to pick with an ear picker that you might want to back it down and hope for some bigger ears.

We used to want to end up with 22- 24,000, but if it we had a damaged stand we would leave a field if it had 14,000.

Now granted, I think modern corn hybrids do not have the flexibility where thinner populations will put on bigger ears. Not sure how much of that is still bred into a plant.

I still would try planting maybe 18-20,000 and have a little thinner stand for an ear picker.

Good luck, Gene

That's pretty light ground up your way isn't it? I don't think I'd go much over 22,000 up there.

Ask a neighbor or your county agent. Too many variables to shoot you a good answer without knowing much more info.

What does your seed dealer say and how do you plan on fertilize and what do you want for yeild and has your ground been tested all these things enter in final population.

Wow. Folks are at 34-36,000 or more planted, not all come up, around here. Planning on 175bu corn, hoping for 200+ in this area. Moisture is usually only a problem when we get too much.

Dad used to do 19,000 back in the day with little fertilizer.

This is for any row width. Any closer spacing than about 6" will be cause for problems and better spacing is about 8", some varieties even 10", some will depend on variety but that would be a good starting point, Some seed is bread only for picking and will not work good with a sheller and other varieties are good for sheller but not a picker and those are usually a fixed size ear and for picking chose a corn that does not require a high population and plant it farther apart so it will go through the rolls better and also a loose husk type of corn, not a tight husk as most bread for shelling are.
