OT- using preen in garden

I don't want to start a war with you people that think any one using roundup or other weed sprays has sold their soul to the devil but;
Does or has any one use preen to keep the weeds down?

I never heard of it before, but it is in all the stores. Says safe for tomatoes and papers when they are transplanted. Sound just like what I need, but I don't want to try some thing new that could wipe out a years garden.

Wife swears by it. She says you should use "vegetable preen" in you tomato garden. She says it's more pricey.
 
It works good but follow label instructions. I usually will use it after I go thru and till the soil. I have uses it on tators tomaters and everything in between safe to use.

Im not much into gardening and have no idea or opinion on its effectiveness or safety. I can ONLY say I dont like the idea of even more "chemicals" (unless its truly organic???) in the food we all eat, but I guess thats pretty much a lost cause nowadays lol

I use it. It keeps the weeds from germinating. It won't kill them once they have sprouted. It does not kill the weeds. Read the directions carefully.
 
I thought the idea of having a garden is so you wouldn't be eating all those chemicals. If you like chemicals, buy your food. It is full of them.
 
I have no argument with organic gardeners. The man asked a civil question. He deserved a civil answer. I personally grow a garden for the pleasure of growing my own vegetables.
 
Thank you for the GOOD answers. I just found out that it full name is " preen vegetable weed preventer", and it is made from corn gluten.
It is full ORGANIC.
So there! to all you anti chemical nuts. I asked to not pull your chain.

The standard Preen is far more effective and labelled for virtually the same crops. Personally I use Treflan (Active ingreient: trifluralin) that I get at the co-op for much less money. The "Vegetable" corn gluten product never works as well for me as the original.
 
The best stuff is dacthal, but it is getting hard to find. I guess the amount they sell is not worth all the EPA hoops they gotta jump through to keep the label active. It is safe and very effective for most garden vegtables and plants. I have located a supply and am going after it this week. I have used it for 20 years with great success.

Preen is way costlier, unless you buy agricultural grade Treflan and dilute it, then you have to spray it and dont have that nifty little sprinkle can. Preen doesn't get as many broadleaf weeds and is not cleared for as many veggies.

Hope my supply comes through, if it works out I plan to stockpile up a bunch.

For those that may not be aware---there are several formulations of Preen for gardens.

Some contains chemical, some does not. Just know what you are buying and using.

Folk on other sites claim to have good results using corn gluten meal from their local feed store and with substantial savings.

Also realize that it needs multiple applications throughout the growing season.

For me gardening is not about having a chemical free garden. It is about raising vegetables with taste and texture, pleasant appearance, for abundance, and savings. The tomatoes that generally come from the store are what I call cardboard tomatoes. I grow very specific varieties which are pleasing to me and am quite selective.
