Weight of 400 steel posts?

(quoted from post at 03:44:19 05/01/10) Anybody got an idea what 400 steel 5.5 ft. fence posts would weigh? Thanks.

400 times what 1 would weigh??????

Just kidding. I jest set several 6ft T posts and don't believe one weighed more than 5 pounds. Think if you figure a ton you are on the heavy side.

I "think" most tee posts weigh about 1.2# per foot so 400 5 1/2" would weigh about 2640#. The heavy duty posts would weigh closer to 3000#

Depends on posts not all posts weigh the same.go to a farm store look at the posts they will have the weight on them. jim

Posts have a "model" number- used to be heavies were 1.33, lights were .99. That's the weight per foot. I think they have lightened them up a little now, but multiply the model number by length by 400, then go borrow your BIL's one ton.

Not to become a member of the peanut gallery, BUT..

As the missus would say "How much does it weigh you ask? It's gonna weigh all that it weighs.. Now hurry up cause you're wasting time!!!"..

Yea, I need a motivator too.. and she does pretty good at it.. Rome would have been built in a day, if she had been the supervisor!

And we have all heard there is not such thing as a stupid question. But there are always plenty of stupid answers and stupid people.

5.5 foot posts are roughly 7' long. Times 1.25 # per foot is 8.75 #'s a post times 400 is 3500#. More than one pickup load which is probably why you are asking. 7' times 1.33# per foot is 9.31 pounds a post. times 400 is 3724 pounds.

Yea, guess i could just take the bathroom scale out and weigh a few of the ones i have, just figured someone had a ball park figure on what they weigh. Didnt realize there would be that much weight difference. Going after some used t posts i havent seen and just wondering if the old 1/2 ton ford would handle it alright. Thanks for all the replies, its informative and entertaining.

More than a legal pickup load...But a heavy half or 3 quarter ton will haul a pretty good load if you talk to her nicely..
